Chapter 22 - Live to Fight Another Day

I stared at the dark figure blankly. The shadows around him twisted as several more figures appeared around him. They looked like living shadows, mirages. There was a red illuminated diamond shape at the centre of where their faces should be."Captain!" I heard collective screaming. In shock, I realised what was about to happen. I saw several of my men running to my position. Their guns were trained on the dark figure.

" No! Don't!" I tried to yell as hard as I could, but I could feel my voice and energy leaving me. It only came out as a whisper. I am now on the floor, I have never felt this powerless before. In a flash, the man raised his left hand as another storm of black lightning emerged from his fingertips. All of my men were being shocked and lifted form the ground. I heard the collective screams and cries of pain as I cringed. I can't bear to see my brothers and sisters being cooked alive, crying in sheer agony. I tried to stand, but it felt like my own body was fighting me. Bodies of my comrades flew around me. Dust was kicked up form the impact of their fall, followed by large thuds. Some where heavily panting, shuddering from the lingering bolts of electricity. Most lay motionless.

I looked back at the figure. He was imposing. He looked like he had nothing to worry about. I was fuming with rage. This fool will pay for this. I finally gathered my strength to stand at full height. My legs were still wobbling and nearly collapsed as I stood. The dark figure stepped closer, reaching for his waist as he pulled the hilt of a sword. At the click of a button, a silver metallic blade emerged from the hilt. He pointed the blade at me, challenging me. "Captain Hunter of the Ion Skulls. You are wanted for treason against the Noxian empire, arson, murder of military personnel and other criminal activities in the Underground. You have the right to remain silent and comply."

His voice was heavily modulated, extremely deep, almost sounding like a growl. I did not move. I had to stand my ground. I pulled my knife from its cloaked sheath on my arm and twirled my revolver in my hand. The figure rushed me at blinding speed. He brought his blade down from an overhead strike with impeccable force. I used my arm and knife to form a cross to block it.

Even with that, I was pushed back as I felt my shoes grind on the surface of the concrete. Simply stopping that attack felt like a huge endeavour, I know I'm in trouble. I fired a bullet, forcing him back. He retreated swiftly, almost as quickly as he approached. I could not see his movements, his cape and the darkness were distorting it. He flourished his blade to intimidate me. I looked behind him and saw the shadowed figures simply watching. I looked around and saw the dead bodies of my men and the fearful eyes of the rest. I cannot let them down.

With added fury, I dashed toward the enemy. My knife in a reverse grip, aimed at his abdomen. In a flash of black energy, he disappeared, appearing behind me. I was shocked, I did not know how to react. The momentum of my intended strike gave me no opportunity to slow down. I looked behind as I saw a sharp reflective surface being brought down on me. In that surface, I saw my masked face. Behind my mask, the expression of utter horror.

I felt a sharp pain at my side and I loosed a gasp. I stumbled to the ground. The pain was immense, I could not get up. I clutched my side as the dark figure loomed over me. I was now kneeling front of him. He quickly reached for my mask and pulled it off. I was too exhausted to respond to his actions and just let him. He knelt down and examined my face. His helmet quickly dematerialised as I saw him.

Dark grey hair and eyes, almost black. Pale skin. The incarnation of the night. The emperor. I scowled at the sight of him. I want to make him pay. " Red hair, blue eyes. I don't see a scar either. The only thing that matches the description is your arm. That's a shame. You don't have any powers either." The emperor made all these comments to my face as my rage swelled. He saw it and only smirked. "We got the wrong one! But he is definitely a gang leader. Kill him and the rest of his pathetic gangsters." He announced and started walking off. Swiftly, the shadowed men behind him drew their guns and started walking to us.

*Angel's POV*

I felt tears streaming down my cheeks. My throat felt dry from crying. I could not hold it in. The rest of my teammates were also watching on in awe and in fear. The emperor himself came to handle things. He is the only one we have ever seen to defeat our captain. A few of my comrades and I took cover in the command centre, we could only watch in fear as our beloved leader was beaten. It appeared as though it was no competition either. His majesty was disgustingly strong. Damned highborns.

Now, shadowed figures were striding towards us. They started by opening fire on the motionless bodies, confirming that they are dead. My heart was swelling in pain. My comrades, my family were being executed in front of me.

I knew I was powerless, I am a coward, soon, the night will take us all. The only thing I could do was close my eyes and pray as I have done for the past 25 years of my life. " Mighty Elune, may your light show us the way, under the light of the moon do we pray, so we may fight another day," I mumbled these lines repeatedly as I heard those around me began to join in.
The large open room began to sound like a church hall. Our mumbles turned into a chorus as they echoed through the halls of the command centre.

I opened my eyes for a brief second to see the Captain having a gun pointed to his skull. In complete desperation, my mumbles turned into a shout. My throat protested but my will was stronger. " May your light show us the way! Under the light of the moon do we pray! So we may fight another day!"

*ZING*

A blaster bolt rang into the night, what I saw before me brought tears to my eyes. My throat swelled as I could not find words to say. My body felt light, I felt weak. I crumpled to the floor in exhaustion as the world around me spun.

*Hunter's POV*

I looked up and saw the shadowed figure pointing a gun at me. I could imagine his smirk behind his black and red helmet. I want to make him burn, I want to make him pay. But my body was fighting me. I could not stand, I could not retaliate, I could only stare in hatred. I closed my eyes and was ready to accept my fate. My eyelids closed, bringing down the curtains of black, ready to accept that my time has finally come. Unexpectedly, my world suddenly went from black, to silver and white, from darkness, to light.

"Remember your promise. Remember your vow. Remember. Who. You. Are." It was that voice again. Like a whisper on the wind, gentle, but assertive this time. I opened my eyes and saw the figure hesitating to execute me. I heard him mutter in disbelief, " What the hell is this…" My body felt invigorated once more. I felt energy pouring into every fibre of my being. I was in complete shock, I did not know what was happening. I looked down at my right hand to see my once black revolver glowing a brilliant bright silver and white. Bless the moon, I live to fight another day.

With new vigor, I quickly raised my gun at my executor as I pulled the trigger. His body flew backwards, until it landed in front of the emperor, motionless. The mighty leader turned to face me. I saw his shocked expression, mouth agape, eyes starting in disbelief. All shadowed figures turned to me, they had to stop executing my crew to put me down. The emperor pointed to me, it seems as though he wasn't even slightly shaken, his calm exterior has remained in tact.

Swift as the wind, the figures all launched at me, blending in with the shadows, commanding making them morph around them. They were very quick, blink and you will miss them. However, they were nothing new to me. Feeling the energy in my right arm, I punched the ground, sending shockwaves threw the earth and creating a crater in the cement. All 3 of the remaining shadows flew back. I wasted no time in executing them. I lifted my gun as blue and silver bullets left the barrel.

The emperor was shocked, but he reactivated his blade once more, preparing to run to me. However, like fireworks in the night sky, a bright light surrounded me and my men. A wall of fire divided us form the emperor. Draco landed in front of me in his draconic armour. "Apologies for the late entry, they sent a new battalion for us. Get to the docks." Draco explained. I looked behind and saw several ships for our escape. I nodded and signaled my men to make a break for it. They ran, hauling equipment and the bodies of our comrades.

Just as we got on the boat, the emperor parted the flames with his sword. He watched as we sped off into the night. Conceding, he retracted his blade.
