Chapter 1 - Miss Step

It is said, be weary of words you speak. As well as the path you walk. For you know not the destruction you shall leave in your wake.

Transcribed from the Scroll of Carlen, Found in the ruins of the Carlen abbey.

The Rain fell like Icy Knives On Rollins coat, soaking him to the bone. The eves of the buildings rushed like a waterfall. Krian was miserable in the Fall, constant storms battered the city most of the year. Rollins hurried to the guard outpost, to escape the deluge. The outpost was a leaky and disordered mess, the wind howled through the structure. All the guards set inside a stone base at the center of the structure, leaving everything else to the elements. No one came up to greet him when he entered, knowing they were bunkered down for warmth he quickly memorized the smudged and soaked report.

The Report was a couple blocks away, most reports are verified before a Verity like Rolins is called in with this weather that would be unlikely for awhile. Pulling His leather Duster tight around his shoulders he left after verifying with the map.

The building was silent, and old. A Thickness hung in the air around even in this rain. The old Store house had been converted into Communal Lodging. Rollins stood considering just setting fire to it and leaving. "The duty of Verity" The old prayer ran through his mind. His student Masons Face came to mind, So full of Admiration for Their order. Rollins made his way toward the back entrance.

Rollins entered the wide common room, around him sat the debris of battle, Broken chairs , tables, couches and corpse chunks lay A strew. Slowly he made his way toward the dividing arch. Observing as he went, A large podium was knocked over at the back of the room and Two large stair cases lifted from the floor wrapping around the outer walls to the second story. Looking towards the far southeast corner Three objects came into view, Slumped together Pushing on what appeared to be a spandrel door. Rollins knew the danger, he readied his blade. As he Assumed his stance he heard a loud pop of a glass vase under his foot. As his eyes dropped in dismay, the creatures were already charging and closing distance fast. Rollins Dipped low under the first strike. Carrying the momentum, he flicked his sword up across the neck of the second Attacker. With a fluid motion he used it to turn on his heels and continued the strike into the Skull of the last attacker. Continuing with near inhuman Agility and force he assumed a reverse grip Rollins pulled the blade free of the corpse. Implanting the blade in the First attackers skull. Without thought he Quickly Dashed for the nearest exit. On the far side of the dividing wall. His heart filled with hope as the door was almost within reach then pain and darkness followed.

Marston and Purin had been asked to check into another report of accursed within the city. Their report ended up being a Gobmar, Short human like creatures that live underground, they typically borrow so having a group appear in your basement would be troubling. As it wasn't accursed they sent for the local guard and on their wake back received word of the second report. Not hearing who was assigned they both went. They arrived at the large warehouse instantly smelling the putrid sent of decay. They drew their weapons outside Marston was tall with long brown hair tied tightly up. Her features were lean and fierce some save for her silhouette no one would guess she was a woman, with her she carried a Verity Rapier. Purin was her husband a large man who easily was the biggest man in the room. Everyone described him as the gentle giant. Purin wielded a large two handed axe and two smaller crescent axes. They entered cautiously through the front and were quick to find the disturbing remains of Rollins, his limbs had been torn from his corpse and large chunks were missing. It appeared on or multiple accursed people tried to eat him, "Poor sod" "PURIN!" "That's a fellow Verity!" Marston said in a whisper. "I meant the poor sod who chewed on him, probably burned up from the inside." Marston shook her head as she turned she saw the Accursed, not one not two but four sitting along the stair well just watching them. Before they could rush Marston shouted "Fallback Bring the corpse!" Even with a head start the accursed were on their heels as they dived out the building, Purin closed and held the door stopping all but one from bolting out. The one who did quickly meet a rapiers blade to its eye socket, Marston quickly lit torches and lanterns and hurled them onto the roof and windows praying the damp building would catch. Then using her blade to slice her had she clasped them together as her silver blood ran down her wrist she began to chant, "Helvac Signra" repeatedly her voice rising with each phrase. A few moments later white flames begin flowing from her cut palm, Quickly she pushed her palm upward and down to the structure. The flames from her palm seemed to take life as they rushed towards the now cracking door. Purin jumped to the side just before the flames impacted only catching a few wisps of fire himself. The sentient flames slammed into the door, splintering it into millions of burning bits. The flames forced their way past the incinerating accursed, once in the middle of the room well out of sight of its caster it hurled up through the building's roof smashing and burning beams on its way. Beautifully it burst from the collapsing building resembling a raven as the flames curled to extinction. Onlookers watched from closed windows and doors as the two knights wrapped the mutilated corpse in bandages and carried him away.

Rolins story is one on hundreds among The Verity knights. Long ago God made Human kind, for whatever reason God left his creations. Some say the scholars of old found a way to kill the deity, others that he was just tired of us. When he left a part of us left with him, this part kept us whole. Now a sickness covers the land, Accursed we call them. They are like you and me just normal folk, the difference is when they couldn't take life any more, either personal trauma or a long list of factors they would snap and change. Forms twisted no longer human with intense strength and near impenetrable hide. A Group formed known as the abbey's each its own separate church entity. With the abbey came the saints and those who fight and die against the accursed, the Verity, this is their story.
