Chapter 19 - The Perfect Distraction

No one moved an inch. The atmosphere was so thick that I had to hold my breath. It felt like the air around me was toxic. The first person to move would surely lose whatever battle they were fighting and I had a lot to lose. My body went stiff.

"Alex!? Are you in there!?" my heart began to race. It was Jayden. I'd forgotten all about him coming over this morning. I took a peek over towards Alice trying to see her expression. My heart stopped when I saw that she was also looking directly at me. She didn't move, didn't blink and it didn't even look like she was breathing. She was completely still and she was staring right at me. I wanted to look away, but I was afraid of what might happen if I did. Would she make a run for it or go after Jayden? Was she coming after me? What could I do except maintain eye contact?

"Listen, this is the police! Leave the premises right now!" there was a silence and then the sound of a loud bang at the bottom of the door. That idiot! He's kicking the door. Another loud bang. This guy is trying to get someone killed.

"I'm not leaving without Alex, so open the damn door!" again he kicked the door. I struggled to sit still. It felt like my skin was crawling. Alice's eyes were burning holes into my head. The face she was making made me feel like I was living in a nightmare, which technically I was. The worst part is that she still hasn't blinked. I could see her eyes becoming pink as the air dried them out and then she took a very deep breath.

"Alex sweetie, please get rid of your boyfriend. He's ruining the moment." I was so shocked that I turned away towards the door, blushing like crazy and then the terror set in. I'd looked away from her. I quickly turned back, but it was too late. She was on the move. She pushed Tyler to the ground and ran at the police officer. He wasn't ready for her and hesitated before aiming his gun at her. That small window of time was enough for her to push the gun away and ram into him. They both hit the ground with a loud thud and then she quickly sits up to hold him down. She slowly looked up at me and smiled. I curled up into a bawl and surprised both her and myself. I could move my legs. She looked completely enraged.

"How are you moving! I was sure that it would be a few days until that poison wore off. You shouldn't be able to move your legs!" this got Max's attention.

"You poisoned our son!? You've gotten out of control! You're murdering children, using the twins as a shield, attacking innocent people and police officers! You've finally lost it! Look, you've hurt Tyler!" she looked back at him and followed his gaze over to Tyler who was lying on the ground. Tears were streaming down his face as Angle tried her best to soothe him. "This family can't handle this much mental and physical damage, Alice." she looked back at me and then over at the door. She didn't care about anything that he'd said to her. She grabbed the gun from the officer she was crushing under her and stood up. He knew not to try anything as she turned away and began to walk towards the door, but I guess I didn't get the memo. I quickly stood and frantically held onto the couch as I forced myself to walk. My legs were weak and they wobbled with every step, but I didn't care. Jayden began to rhythmically kick at the door, making Alice tense her hand and squeeze the hilt of the gun tightly. I ran out of couch to help me and had to go off on my own. My legs trembled painfully with each step, but I walked faster. Soon Alice was standing right in front of the door and she leaned forward to look into the peephole. She stood still for a while and this gave me the time I needed to get right behind her. She lifted the gun to the door and aimed it just below the peephole. I jumped forward and grabbed onto her just as she pulled the trigger. The sound was ear splitting. I latched onto her and grabbed her wrist. We fell backward onto the floor. My back crashed into the floor and she came down on top of me. It felt like i'd broken something, but I still refused to let go of her. I heard a scream and a loud thud on the other side of the door. She'd still shot him. I wrapped my legs around her and forced the gun out of her hand. The police officer then came into view. He towered over us for a moment before grabbing Alice and throwing onto a wall to cuff her. The other police officer cuffed Max and called for multiple ambulance. I was in so much pain, but I forced myself to stand up and open the front door. Jayden was laying on the porch holding his arm. He looked up at me and gave me a weak smile. I was so happy that I began to cry.

"You idiot! I thought you were dead!" a crowd of worried people gathered around the house and from a far I could hear sirens. Help was on the way. I dropped to my knees by his side and continued to cry. I didn't know what else to do at this point. The sirens got louder and louder until that was all that I could hear, then everything went dark.

"Look at the big hero. You didn't need me at all. I'm glad that you were able to use my clues to help save the day. So I guess in a way, I save the day as well." I couldn't help but roll my eyes at him. I didn't know that I was this annoying.

"Yes, thank you so much for giving me a riddle to stop a murderer. You did so~ much." he just gave a smug smile and leaned against what I can only assume is a wall in the darkness.

"I'm going to miss these little moments that we have together, Alex. Ya' know that soon we'll become one and this place won't exist anymore. Once I become a part of you a new place will be made so that you can use your powers properly without me." he was still smiling, but I could tell that he was sad.

"I'll admit, I don't like you all that much, but i'm going to miss you. You're the only person I can talk to without having to hold back any details or feelings." he chuckled and folded his arms.

"Why would you have to? You're literally talking to yourself." we both broke out into laughter. I guess it was better to laugh in this moment than to cry. It was like I could feel what he was feeling as well. It was the first time that I was able to hear what he was thinking. It was like a faint cry in the distance. He was sad, but he put on a brave face.

"You're scared aren't you?" he stopped laughing and looked over at me.

"Scared of what?"

"Scared of dying to become a part of me." as soon as the words left my mouth his eyes began to water. "You idiot. Why'd you try to laugh it off? It's normal to be afraid to die, Alex." he uncrossed his arms and ran a hand through his hair.

"I didn't want to make our goodbye a sad one, ya' know? I just wanted us to leave this on a good note. This is hard enough as it is and not there's the damn water works started!" I quickly walked over to him and gave him a hug. He didn't hug me back, but I know he wanted to. I closed my eyes and hugged him tightly.

"Goodbye, Alex." I could hear him begin to sob.

"Goodbye, Alex" then I opened my eyes and I was back in the hospital. Jayden was sitting in a chair slumped over to his right. I looked all around the room. There wasn't a hint of darkness. He was gone. I felt different, but it didn't feel like anything had changed. I guess that means that Alex and I have become one.

"Alex! You're awake!"
