Chapter 3 - Part Three

Lake and Briar stayed as low as possible and moved as quietly as they could so they wouldn't draw attention to themselves. The creature had moved farther towards the direction they had entered before which left them a few feet from the creature to hopefully slip out unseen. Both were thinking the same thing; what was this thing and did it come with the comet? If so, there was no telling what other unknown things the comet brought with it.

Briar and Lake were closer to the opening now and Lake's heart started racing when he saw the alien stop, make a clicking sound and look around slightly turning to face them. He stopped moving and held his hand up in front of Briar so she would stop walking. Lake pointed to the creature and pressed his index finger to his lips and held his breath as he watched the massive beast maneuver around the small hallway and clicked again.

"I wonder if it's blind…" Lake pondered to himself. "It must go by sound, which is a pro and a con for us. If he can't see us, we could be close to him and he wouldn't notice. But if we make a sound…"

Lake's self pondering was interrupted by a loud siren-like sound that came from outside. The creature turned towards and spread its front leg out to either side of the hallway and returned sound and ran out. Lake and Briar looked at each other confused.

"What in the heck was that?" Briar whispered. "What do you think that noise was? Do you think there are more of them out there?"

"I'm not sure what that sound was. Could've been another one calling out or something. Maybe it was calling for help," Lake stated with a shrug as he helped her over rubble. "I'm sure as heck not going to follow it to find out."

"If it was another one calling for help, what do you think it needed help with? Do you think there are more survivors out there?" Briar asked.

Once again, Lake shrugged. "It's possible. And if there are survivors out there, hopefully they know how to protect themselves from whatever those things are."

Briar shuttered. "It makes you wonder what that comet brought to earth. Could this be the end of the human race?"

"I wish I could answer that question, Briar," Lake said. "But if we are to hope, we should hope that there are hundreds of survivors out there. We just need to find them."

Briar slightly chuckled. "When I thought 'end of the world' I pictured a zombie apocalypse. Not an alien invasion."
