Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Hi. My name is Luca Lynes and I'm immortal.

My story begins some time ago when I realised how much debt I was in as a student with a poor background and average grades. As a result of this, I ended doing various part-time jobs to earn a bit of cash and the jobs I took were completely random. Basically, I did nearly anything (legal) for money.

One of the jobs was a type of drink tester and reviewer.

It was a lovely Saturday afternoon when I received a package from an unknown company asking me to taste test their drink. Now of course I was suspicious and did some research on the company online and everything seemed legit so I thought, why not? The drink in the package looked a lot like cola so I assumed it would taste similar.

It did not.

I thought the drink must be bad seeing how sour and bitter it tasted but after a few minutes, I collapsed and blacked out.

Waking up a day later, I immediately rang up the company to complain but when I looked up their number on my computer, I was shocked to see that their entire website and page had vanished. It was as if they never existed in the first place.

I thought that maybe I was hallucinating everything but seeing the bottle was still there, I was clueless as to what just happened. I went for a check-up at the doctor to see if something happened but was told I was in healthy and stable condition. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time and leisure to do more research on the mysterious company and seeing there was nothing wrong with me, I continued on with my daily life as per usual.

This is where things took a turn.

At one of my part-time jobs, I worked in a restaurant as a delivery boy and on one of my runs, a car came speeding out of nowhere and hit me straight in the ass. Not literally of course.

With that kind of event, most would've died on the spot and I was pretty sure my body was mangled because I had flown and crashed into a wall. Alas, something strange occurred.

My broken limbs began repairing themselves and my face and body patched themselves up. All my cuts and wounds were healed and I felt a warm current flowing through me making me feel refreshed.

Now I tend to daydream a lot so I thought this was another one of them but the pain from the crash felt too real to be fake. The driver of the car had long run off and all I had left was my damaged bike and mashed food. The boss was furious and I lost my job. Bastard didn't even listen to my explanation.

And so I ventured back home with a sunken expression. However, I didn't dwell on my job loss for too long because I was still puzzled over what happened to my body. To test out if what I saw was my imagination or not, I took a knife from my kitchen drawer and bit my lips before slicing my palm.

"Ouch!"

Blood dripped down the side and into the sink. Then, like magic, the wound closed up and my hand looked as good as new.

"So it wasn't my imagination. But if that's so, then does that mean I can't die? What could have caused...."

My eyes zeroed in on the bottle of mysterious soda from the previous day. I had kept it because I was planning to report it to some authorities but now that I think about it, that weird drink knocked me out for a day and suddenly, my body repairs itself when I get hurt. This was no coincidence.

Picking up the bottle, I read the label and the ingredients in it - something I should have done before drinking it. In the ingredients section, there was one thing that caught my eye.

"A drop of Elixir of Life."

That was clearly not a normal ingredient. If I recall correctly, there were many theories over what was called the 'Elixir of Life'. It was something used in many mythologies and has made appearances in fantasy stories like Harry Potter. In there, the Elixir of Life needed to be consumed on a daily basis for the user to retain immortality. Would that apply to this bottle then?

Other stories and theories state that the Elixir of Life only needed to be consumed once. In other words, I don't know how long this immortality of mine will last. A part of me hopes it last forever and the other part doesn't. Being able to not die is cool and something everyone who fears death wants but I dread the fact there will be no one to accompany me and I'll end up alone and bored. Oh wait, that's already my life.

Nevertheless, all I can do for now is go with the flow. My goal right now is to pay off my debt and that's what I plan to accomplish. Immortality research can wait.

------------------

[A few weeks later]

"Here is your change," I handed the money to the customer and watched blankly as she left. I looked at the clock on the wall and saw my shift was over so I changed out of my uniform and into a white t-shirt and jeans.

"You done for today?" my co-worker, John, came into the lockerroom.

"Yep. I'll be off now."

"See you tomorrow,"

I gave a short wave and exited the store. Opening my phone, I checked my balance.

~$20, 015

I sent another thousand to the creditors I owed and calculated how much was left to pay. I could pay the full amount now but then I wouldn't have much money left to live on. There was still $16, 000 to pay which means a couple more weeks I should have paid off everything.

"Hahaha, I can't wait!"

I'll be free of debt in a few weeks and I could finally stop a few jobs. And then I could start experimenting with this body of mine.

Yesterday I had sliced my palm again to check if it will still repair itself and it did. I checked it off on my calendar. Today marks the fifthteenth week I've been 'immortal' and nothing much has changed. There was no need right now for my immortality. There were no villains, no monsters, no end of the world so I just lived life as normal.

I think I jinxed it though.

As I was walking and grinning about my nearly paid debt, the sky suddenly turned dark and the air turned cold. I looked up like everyone else and gasped as big dark circle started forming in the sky. The middle was all black and the circle gave off a sinister vibe.

Then, one by one, creatures...monsters started falling out of it. My eyes widened as I saw what looked to be a massive orc lift his club and smash a group of bystanders. It let out a roar prompting everyone to scream and start running away. Me included.

And thus, the world descended into chaos.
