"Draco Malfoy."
The light chatter within the group of first years, who were more excited than anxious about getting their house now that a good handful of people were going, and the people at the tables, who were speaking with their new housemates, almost went completely silent.
Draco walked up from Rune's side without an ounce of nervousness. He actually seemed more than confident about whatever house he was expecting to get. This proved to be a correct assumption as the hat called out his house before the hat was even rested on his head, "SLYTHERIN!" Draco smirked as the green clad students clapped and cheered for him before going to join Crabbe and Goyle, who had already been sorted into Slytherin.
"Harry Potter."
The room went dead silent now.
Many people were waiting for this moment after all. Where would the miracle child be sorted into. The hat mumbled to Harry in curiosity, like it was having trouble picking a house for him. Harry even whispered something back to it, to which the hat responded almost enthusiastically. However, after much debate, the hat shouted,
"GRYFFINDOR!"
The Gryffindors roared with cheers and applause, Harry grinning from ear to ear before running to join his friends who also seemed happy to be with him in the same house. It made Rune feel just a little torn. Rune doesn't know Ron and Harry as much as he did Hermione when they had spent that time together on the train, but Hermione even appeared to be more focused on those two.
Rune's gaze moved from them to the Slytherin table to see Draco glanced from his goons to Rune. When they met their gazes, his averted to Professor McGonagall expectantly.
Was he waiting for me to be called?
Other names were called before Rune's had been spoken. Names like Moon, Nott, Parkinson, and Perks. Patil was called twice as a pair of twins went up one by one, both getting into Gryffindor. When McGonagall had said, "Azriel Rune Black," Rune couldn't help but tense up.
He was nervous too, though as excited as the rest of them. Perhaps he was more restless than anything. His steps were a bit rushed as he made his way up to the stool. It wasn't too tall for him, so he was able to plop down onto it with ease. The witch sat the hat on top of his head and it began to speak.
"Interesting. Veeeery interesting. I haven't seen a Black witch or wizard in quite some time." Its words had Rune taken by surprise.
Haven't seen one in a long time?
As in there had been a witch or wizard within his family at some point in time who has been here?
Rune shifted in place and cleared his throat to speak, "A Azriel magic user has existed before me? But my parents don't do magic."
The hat hummed in amusement now, moving on top of his black locks. "Yes, indeed.. Perhaps the parents of your parents-- or a generation or so before that had a witch or wizard within the bloodline. It isn't very common, though it's certainly not rare. The gap between the last Black wizard and this one is abnormally large for this situation, however." Rune sat there a bit bewildered.
Many more questions flowed through his mind in an instant, and he almost didn't hear the hat continue. It couldn't waste too much time talking to Rune with many more first years to sort waiting for their turn.
"You're quite the smart one, courageous too. A selfless nature that's bound to be some rather entertaining trouble in the future... I see a new spark, however. A strong one, too... better make it-- GRYFFINDOR!"
Rune blinked out of his thoughts as cheers from the Gryffindor table filled his ears.
Spark? What did it mean by spark?
Before he could ask about this "spark", however, the hat was removed from his head. Rune looked up to McGonagall who waited patiently for him to get up and then at the table. Gryffindor... Rune hoped things would go well with him in Gryffindor. He also hopes that he'll be able to see Draco, at least. He looked where Draco was sitting, his eyes locked with Draco who looking shocked and angry at the same time.
