Seeing my "commanding" officers taking off like that, I naturally directly began to run after them, and with my speed, it took me only a few moments to catch up with the two. Officer Klein threw me a surprised look when he saw me catching up before slowing down beside them.
"Don't mind us," he then shouted. "Go, catch the thief instead," he added while pointing toward the thief who was starting to get away. "Come on, run," I heard Officer Grozz adding from the side, so I gave them a nod before I stopped slowing down, and sped up again.
I swiftly left the officer duo behind me and began to rapidly close the distance between the thief and myself. "Stop running, you can't escape me," I called out to the thief, who probably got startled after hearing my voice some eye slightly slowed down for a moment before speeding up again.
I had come close enough that I was able to see the thief turning his head and blanching when he noticed that I/the source of the voice had nearly caught up with him.
He seemed to struggle a bit before he gave me an angry look and turned his head back ahead. He did not bother answering me, and all I heard was him releasing something like a grunt before he sped up once more, which was probably his attempt to open up the distance between us. Not that it helped since I was still closing the distance between us.
To be honest, I could have already caught up with him if I went at my maximum speed since even my unboosted/augmented speed was more than double the thief's speed, but even if I did that, I had no way to stop the thief midrun without causing him some potentially medium to serious harm. Well, at least not without using my supernatural abilities to counteract our/his momentum.
That was why I was pressuring him like this to force him to expand more energy until he had to slow down enough for me to catch him without hurting him. If I was lucky enough, he might even give up running and try to face/stop me in hopes of running away once I was dealt with. By now, we had left the officer duo behind quite a bit, so it was not an impossible plan if he had been facing anyone else.
Anyway, roughly 20 seconds later, I saw the thief throwing another gaze back, and seeing how he nearly stumbled midrun, I'd say he was surprised to see me still closely behind him. I was not sure if he noticed that I had actually closed the distance between us a bit more or not, but he definitely noticed that his plan failed.
"Give up, you can't escape from me. No one's gotten hurt so far, so if you surrender now, I'm sure the sentence won't be too harsh," I advised him loudly. Yet, the thief did not give up.
"F*ck you," he yelled out instead, showing that he did not seem to appreciate my friendly advice. No, instead of surrendering, the thief threw the handbag he stole backward, no doubt trying/hoping to distract or stop me with that maneuver.
What he failed to see, was that I used my telekinesis to adjust the bag's flying path, causing it to land in my hands instead of flying somewhere to my right side. So, when the thief turned his head once more, he ended up seeing me still running after him with the bag he threw out in my arms. I had to laugh a bit when I heard his yell of frustration.
"You already have the sh*tty bag, so leave me the f*ck alone!!!" he screamed and I was able to hear his anger at the situation. "Sorry, no can do," I returned and the thief turned his head and gave me a baleful glare.
"Don't push it, you wannabe cop," he practically growled. "You're forcing me to hurt you," he threatened me. "Don't do anything that would make your situation worse than it already is," I nicely advised him, completely brushing off his threat, which he did not seem to appreciate.
I saw the thief reaching for the side of his belt, and assuming that he wanted to pull something out to harm me, I used my telekinesis to immobilize him. I made sure to levitate him as well to spare him from tumbling around at the sudden stop.
Since he was immobilized, I stopped running and levitated him to my side. I checked his frozen self and saw that the thing he was trying to grab was a Pokeball, so my actions were justified. Still, I left him in the position he was frozen in so that Officer Klein and Grozz could see it as well.
Since I did not want to hear the thief beg or insult me, I made sure that his mouth remained shut, though I made sure to tell him that he had the right to remain silent first. Jokes aside, thankfully it only took the officer duo slightly more than a minute to catch up with us, and as soon as they arrived at our side, I shared the capture process with them.
"Well done, rookie," Officer Grozz praised me. "Now, move his arms to his back so that we can cuff him, and then you can release him from your hold," he ordered, and I did as ordered.
"You!!! I'll sue you, you hear me! You can't just use that psychic mumbo jumbo on me like that. That has to be against the law," the thief spit out full of animosity as soon as I stopped immobilizing him.
Funny really, seeing him trying to use the law like that considering that he was breaking the law just now. Still, Officer Klein was not having it and shut him up by throwing around some regulations from the patrol handbook.
"You can do nothing. Regulation 18b states that officers are allowed to use any available means, within reason, to stop a criminal if said criminal is threatening the safety of others or is about to act in a manner that might threaten the safety of others," Officer Klein recited before giving the thief a serious look.
"You trying to reach for a Pokeball falls under this case, so Officer Geo was justified in his actions. Especially since he ensured that you suffered no injuries during the process," he finished, even going so far as to directly address me as Officer Geo instead of using the prefix temporary to make a point.
"Alright, now stop blabbing before you worsen your situation," Officer Grozz spoke up. "Remember you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court," he reminded the thief who seemed to want to protest but finally quietened down after all.
Meanwhile, Officer Klein contacted the HQ and asked them to send someone to take the thief into custody after sharing our position. A few moments later an officer with a Kadabra appeared. Officer Grozz then handed the thief over to the new arrival, before telling me to hand the retrieved bag to the officer as well, who then left with the criminal in tow.
We then made our way back to the starting point of this chase to inform the victim of the successful capture of the criminal. We also notified the lady that she could go to the Police HQ to pick up her bag from there sometime tomorrow evening or the day after tomorrow since it was currently a piece of evidence. She would know the exact time once they called her to attend the court case since she was the victim.
If she absolutely needed something from her bag like her house keys, she could visit the HQ now. Otherwise, she had to wait for the call before going over to pick up her bag if she wanted to avoid being possibly rejected in case they still needed the bag as evidence.
Anyway, after settling the issue with the victim, we resumed our patrol, but nothing as interesting as the chase happened for the rest of the patrol. All we did was issue some warnings due to littering, and sound pollution, along with minor stuff such as breaking up verbal arguments we came across, or checking up on people who were sleeping in public areas to see if they were alright/conscious.
I was happy to see that they were not harsh toward the latter group. Officer Klein and Grozz simply let them continue sleeping if they appeared healthy, as long as they were not resting in a popular or busy area. In case they did, they referred the people to either the closest shelter or the closest suitable public park with benches, and they did that without sounding condescending.
At the end of my shift, I thought that the day had been interesting enough, and I was kind of looking forward to the next day. It was definitely the best unit I had been assigned to so far, though saying that after just the first day might be a bit premature.
The next day, I was surprised to note that our patrol route was not the same as yesterday. When I shared my surprise with the officer duo, Officer Klein explained that there were a total of 7 routes that the foot patrol teams usually covered, with each team of each shift covering one route for a week.
However, their superior assigned them another route this morning, which was why today's route was different. This route appeared a bit more peaceful since we seemed to be walking through a calmer part of the central area, though there were still a lot of pedestrians going about their day. They just seemed to be in much less of a hurry than the people we came across yesterday.
Regardless, about two hours into our patrol a lady accompanied by a distraught little child approached us to ask for help. Apparently, the little boy's playmate went missing while they were playing hide-and-seek, the playmate being a young little Sentret.
Naturally, the first thought that came to mind hearing that was that the Snetret might still be hiding. However, that idea was discarded when the lady said that it had been over 20 minutes since Sentret hid and that they had been calling for Senny, as the little boy called his friend, for the last 10 or so minutes.
Hearing that, Officer Grozz went down on one knee and consoled the sad little boy. He promised that they would help him find his little friend, and while he was doing that, Officer Klein asked the mother if they had something that had the scent of the Sentret
Luckily she did, and she actually pulled out a cute little T-shirt out of her bag before handing it to Officer Klein. She explained that Sentret and her son usually like to wear matching shirts while walking outside, but that they had taken it off for the duration of their game to keep it from getting dirty.
A quick look at the boy's shirt confirmed that it was a matching one to the smaller one in Officer Klein's hand. That aside, he pulled out a Pokeball and proceeded to release a Growlithe. He then held the little T-shirt in front of Growlithe's nose and told it to follow the scent to its source/owner.
Seeing him do that, I offered to call out Enji/Arcanine to assist with the search but he declined after asking me about Enji's size, citing that they avoided calling out Pokemon above a certain size unless truly necessary.
Anyway, we quickly followed after Growlithe who had set out, following its nose on an invisible path leading to its target. Growlithe stopped a few times at certain places, which Sentret most likely stopped at long enough to leave a proper scent behind, but we failed to spot the Sentret at any of these places, and Growlithe always moved on after a few seconds.
It was at the sixth place that Growlithe truly stopped to start a serious search. That behavior told us that Sentret had to be here somewhere, so we along with the mother-son pair shouted its name a few times while Growlithe tried to sniff out Sentret's position.
Unfortunately, there was no reaction to any of our shouts, and a few moments later it became apparent why. Growlithe managed to spot Sentret's hiding place, and it was a little hole beside a tree that was covered by leaves. The reason it did not react was that the little one fell asleep, which was why it did not come out of its hiding place even after 20 minutes of hiding.
The little boy rushed up to the little Sentret and pulled it in a hug before playfully scolding it for falling asleep while they were playing and worrying him like that. The mother thanked us profusely for our help and the Officer duo simply said it was their job before we resumed our patrol.
As we were walking away, the little boy called out to us, specifically Officer Grozz, and thanked us for helping him find Senny. All three of us had to smile when the boy loudly proclaimed that police officers were awesome.
