Chapter 389 - CH22 (386), The Professor Circle In Wonder (2)

Date: 30.29.2181

Location: New Bark City, Johto.

POV: Professor Brian Elm (3rd person)

Well, as expected of his mentor, Brian thought while reading through the alert he had received. A newly discovered Pokemon line, with two confirmed Pokemon species, was an incredible discovery.

Not to mention, that it appeared that the two Pokemon at Oak Labs currently seemed to be the only members of their kind in the known world. The fact that there were two members of the Pokemon line present, most likely meant that the higher form, Toedscruel it seemed to be called, managed to produce a child with another local species.

That was truly interesting and he could not help but wonder if his mentor would be interested in letting him participate in the research into the species breeding possibilities. Pokemon breeding was after all his main study path and he was the academic authority on the subject, so he could without hesitation say that he was the most qualified person in the field.

It would be in everyone's interest if the breeding issue got researched at the fastest possible speed to ensure the successful propagation of the species to prevent their loss in case something unfortunate happens to the current two specimens.

That was the biggest problem with having only a scant few members of a species, the risk of said species dying out was too high, so increasing their number was definitely a top priority for everyone involved.

Frankly, he did not doubt that Oak Labs could handle the research themselves, but his interest was piqued and he really wanted to work with a newly discovered species since he had yet to have such a privilege.

Besides, his addition could speed up the research, and that was always a plus. No doubt Professor Oak would see the merit of him joining the team, and he did not even have to take the leading role on paper.

Brian was content to leave that honor to the current project leader responsible for the breeding subject. Yes, the idea had merit, Professor Brian Elm convinced himself while grabbing his phone to call his mentor to present his offer/request.

POV: Professor Dan Birch (3rd person)

Interesting, he thought after his assistant informed him of the matter that had been leaked from his mentor's lab. While the amount of information that had become public was pretty small, he did not doubt, that it was enough to arouse the curiosity of everyone in their profession.

The names of the two newly discovered species were revealed. The fact that they belonged to the same evolution line, as well as the typing of both being ground and grass was also among the information that was leaked.

The only other information that his mentor allowed to be prematurely released was that Toedscruel and Toedscool had a hitherto unknown ability, but not what they decided to call the ability or what said ability did.

Still, Dan was sure that anyone capable of a bit of critical thinking would notice that the species titles/names had a striking connection to another known species, so the new species might have had at some point splintered off from the "old" one.

Honestly, he was more interested in what kind of ecology the new species could live in and what its preferred ecology looked like. The species' environmental wants and needs, as well as its sustenance options, were things he was curious about.

Not only that but also its reaction to other Pokemon species. However, this was not surprising since his main study direction was Pokemon habitats, so everything that was of importance to that topic elicited his interest.

There was no doubt in his mind, that all these questions were things that would come up during the research into the newly discovered species, especially once the topic of spreading the new species to other regions or even continents came up after the number of species members reached a certain threshold.

No doubt Brian would be interested in helping the species reach that point, but his thing was more along the line of making sure that the species could settle down and meet its needs in those regions/continents in case the alliance did want to spread out the species.

In that case, the questions he previously raised were vital to determine the best habitats for the new Pokemon. Dan decided to ask his mentor to send him a batch of Toedscool and Toedscruel once they had gone above the critical number so that he could obtain the answers to these questions.

It would be better to hand in a request to the alliance as well to ensure that they did not try to skip him for some reason despite him being the leading authority as far as Pokemon habitats were concerned.

Another thing he decided to do once he had received the go-ahead was to invite Professor Cedric Juniper to the project. The father of Aurea, and former head professor of Unova, was someone that studied the distribution and biology of Pokemon, so he would be a great addition to the project.

He could freely admit that the fact that Cedric Juniper was another senior authority in his field, so the possibility that he might be the other option the alliance could choose was what made him consider inviting him out of his own initiative.

Still, there was no need to get ahead of himself. First, he had to get the approval of his old mentor. Once Professor Oak gave his okay, the rest would easily follow, so he took out his phone. There was no need to wait until they had raised the number of Pokemon to make the request after all.

POV: Professor Ishiro Serizawa (3rd person)

Seeing the latest bit of news coming from Oaks Lab, he could not help but be a bit frustrated, especially since his latest two ventures had gone wrong.

The trip to Hoenn had been a complete bust, and he had failed to find anything related to a potential ghost-type Magikarp variant. His project after that, the one that had been refused by Oak Labs on the ground that Mikail was not yet ready for a cooperation project ended up not going as planned as well.

He tried multiple ways to stimulate multiple groups of Magikarps, in hopes of one of them turning into an ancient variant. However, so far even after more than 6 months, no indicators of success were to be seen.

The only good news was that coincidentally a Magikarp in the Ancient Stone test group became a rock-type Magikarp variant. However, it remained the only one in its group to go through such a variation so far.

Still, its existence was proof that it was possible, so his lab started another project to successfully create rock-type Magikarp variants. This project was much more promising, and while none of the Magikarp had gone through a full/successful variation so far, multiple Magikarp have shown signs of a change in the right direction.

Once they managed to find the most effective way to trigger the variation they could hopefully produce enough rock-type Magikarp variants to start a viable breeding group to produce a steady stream of naturally born variants.

If they managed to do both, the success would earn him enough acclaim to rival the discovery of a new species. Yet, regardless of the success, they were seeing in the second project, he was not yet ready to abandon the first one before at least a full year had gone by without any signs of success.

Ishiro was still hopeful that one of the test groups would show signs of turning into an ancient variant. In the meantime, he used any free time he had to read up on anything that had a chance of containing news regarding an ancient Magikarp.

He did not want to pin his hope on some boy in another lab, especially not after they had a lead on producing a steady stream of variants, even if it was not the type they had initially aimed for.

Location: Hau'oli Island, Alola.

POV: Professor Samson Oak (3rd person)

He watched as his assistant left his office after informing him about the leak from his cousin's lab. It seemed that Samuel had finally allowed the news to leak, which meant that they had finished the short-term research of their project since their last talk on the new species that the new assistant that had joined his cousin's lab had managed to discover/track down.

Yes, Samuel had called him shortly after young Mikail had brought him the Toedscruel and Toedscool to talk with him about the possibility of sightings of their species around Alola since he guessed that the environment of our region could allow for the development of such a species.

On that front, Samuel asked if he had come across any variants that could serve as the link between the Toeds-line and the Tenta-line since Pokemon variants and commander Pokemon were his main research directions.

Unfortunately, he had to disappoint his cousin since that was not the case, and he reminded him that Alola was not the only tropical island after Samuel told him the reason for his inquiry.

While he could not help Samuel with his first request, he could help him with his second one. Samuel asked for two or three relatively young female Alolan Exeggutor for the breeding part of their research.

Samson was naturally willing to help his cousin, but he asked for a few of their progeny if the Alolan Exeggutor he sent over managed to produce some Toedscool.

He was hoping to introduce the Toeds-line to Alola since the species fit the ecology of their region as far as he saw from what Samuel had been willing to share with him.

POV: Professor Michael Cameron (3rd person)

He closed the news alert that informed him about the leak from Oak Labs on the two new species that had been discovered. He had already known about that for quite some time. Two days after Mikail caught the Toeds-duo actually.

Mikail's protector had reported that Mikail managed to capture a batch of new Pokemon and that the batch actually contained a dark gold stage Pokemon. His report also mentioned that the dark gold stage Pokemon, as well as another one, resembled Tentacruel and Tentacool but were at the same time very different.

A day later he reported that the two Pokemon had been confirmed to be members of a new species group, and the Aura Guardian Order had shared the news with him once that had been confirmed.

Michael was thankful to Professor Oak that he had allowed Mikail's protector to share the news with the order and subsequently him. Had he not given his permission, the protector would have been bound to keep the knowledge to himself due to the restrictions placed on him after he took his role.

Still, all of this only increased his interest in working on a collaborative research project with Oak Labs/Mikail. Michael's last application had been politely declined/put on hold on the basis that Mikail was not yet ready to participate in a collaborative research project.

Still, the reply from Oak Labs had indicated an interest on their part, so he was planning to send another one before the end of the year. Mikail would by that point hopefully be ready.

Regardless, he was obviously not going to stay idle until then. Michael together with his team had been working on project alternate evolution, and while they had not had any success on the alternate evolution, they managed to subdue an Annihilape and worked on a parallel project to see if they could manage to get it and its anger under proper control.

That one had made only minimal headway so far, but he was not giving up on either project. He was confident that both endeavors were possible, and he was determined to prove them even if it took years to do so.
