Chapter 12 - Becoming a Level 0 Acolyte

Holy Soul Academy. A grand existence within Lin City. Although the academy itself doesn't have much power on its own, it has the unique identity of being the founding father of the Holy light association: one of the four great magus organizations.

Although the headquarters of the Holy Light association had long since been moved to the capital of light, you can still feel the pride of a top-tier faction within the academy's walls. High above the city, a man in black robes could be seen flying through the skies. He easily passed by the city walls and headed for the academy.

It was only when he came near that the alarm sounded.

"Is that... A four-star magus! He's wearing black robes! Sound the alarm!"

Instantly, the whole city went into lockdown. All of the normal citizens hurriedly rushed into their homes in fear. If they were to be caught in a Magus's battle, only death awaited them. At the moment, over two hundred magi rushed out of the Academy.

At the same time, an enormous barrier flickered to life surrounding the premises of the academy. Although all the acolytes had hurried to enter the academy before the barrier activated, some were still left trapped outside the barrier.

It was then that a figure dressed in white robes flew out from the academy's main building.

"Headmaster!"

A magus wearing white robes and light armor rushed out to greet the headmaster who was flying over. He looked up at the man with admiration. Although the headmaster was only a peak three-star, he possessed a rare magic tool that allowed him to fly.

"Master, we have discovered a four-star magus, wearing black robes outside of the academy."

Nodding his head in acknowledgment, the headmaster rubbed his grey beard and looked up at the four-starred magus in exasperation. Then, slightly annoyed, he sent him a telepathic message.

[Did you really have to show up in black robes, Darius? You scared the hell out of my people!]

Darius just smiled as the headmaster ordered the guards to let down the barrier. It wasn't long before the both of them were sitting in front of the table sipping tea. The headmaster spoke first.

"So why'd you show up uninvited this time? And wearing black robes nonetheless!"

Darius took a sip of the tea.

"Good tea!"

The headmaster gave him an annoyed look causing him to put the cup down.

"Don't be like that! We joined the sect in the same year; we're like brothers! Shouldn't we catch up first?"

"Cut the crap, Darius! You might be a four-star now, but you can't walk over me in this school."

The headmaster's words carried a faint threat as complex formations revealed themselves around the room. Darius put on a complicated look before leaning forward in his chair.

"Fine. I need a favor."

...

Most people in the magus world would say that meditation was boring. After all, the only thing you can do while meditating is sit still, breathe, and follow the mana paths specified by your technique.

For Kane, however, meditation was one of the most exciting things he had ever done to date. Who could blame him? He came from a world without magic. Only someone who lived in a world without powers would understand just how addictive it is to become stronger with hardly any effort.

"Phoooo!"

Kane breathed out forcefully, sending out a hardly detectable mist of mana particles. Opening his eyes, he was surprised to see that the early onset of sunlight was already starting to pour through his tiny window.

Unbeknownst to him, he had meditated the entire night. Stretching lazily, he checked his harvest for the night.

Kane was starting to get annoyed by the system's insults. However, he quickly calmed down as he noticed something interesting.

[My EXP hasn't moved!]

In other words, EXP is completely independent of Kane's meditation level. The only question is what he needs to do to level up. The most likely answer would be that he gets EXP from completing missions. Although the topic was quite important, Kane didn't dwell on it. The way to level up would naturally be revealed in the future.

At that moment, a knock sounded. Shaken from his thoughts, Kane opened the door. Standing outside his room was a young man who appeared to be almost 20 years old. He had brown hair and the makings of a mustache on his upper lip. The young man in question bowed to Kane in a subservient manner.

"Sir Nigel, I would like to apologize for our previous treatment toward you! We had no idea you had been promoted to young miss's personal butler!"

Looking at the bowing man Kane didn't even know how to react. Hurridly, he raised the young man from his bow.

"It's fine! It's fine!"

Hearing his words, the man smiled in relief.

"Thank you, sir! I'm your new assistant Jae! The master sent me to bring you to your knight training while we finish preparing your new accommodations."

Kane raised his eyebrows.

"Knight training?"

Based on Kane's knowledge from novels and his current memories from this world. Knights here weren't the generic European kind. In this world, Knights were supernatural beings who cultivated their lifeforce to enhance physical strength.

Once an apprentice knight develops their lifeforce to a certain point, it is possible to awaken their life seed in a life-threatening situation. Beyond this level are grand knights. Those on the level of grand knights can easily become a general in a large kingdom.

Although he didn't know the exact strength of grand knights, Kane felt they should be on the same level as a peak-level apprentice in this world.

"Yes."

Jae responded.

"The master felt that for you to better protect the young miss, you shouldn't be as fragile as the other apprentice magi."

Kane tried hard not to frown. This servant was problematic. Based on Kane's memories, normal people can't distinguish between a magus and an apprentice. Furthermore, that old magus was comfortable sending a message through this man.

Chances are, this man wasn't a mere servant. In other words, Kane would need to be careful not to expose any information around him.

Rubbing his temples in annoyance, Kane couldn't help but sigh.

"Alright, take me there."
