Chapter 1 - Chapter 1:

As I set the table for dinner, I carefully hung my apron back on the wall and dusted my clothes. With a smile on my face, I picked up my phone and sat down on one of the chairs I set.

The first thing I did was to go to my messages, to see if I got any new messages. My smile increased when I saw that most of my friends had texted me, while some had called. But, the messages that caught my attention was from my old time friend, Dan Matthews. He asked how I'd been doing and where I was, but just ignored those questions and changed the topic.

"It's him again right?" those words rang loud and clear in my ears, sending a sudden shiver down my spine. I shot my head up immediately and placed my phone behind my back.

"Devon, you're home?" I asked nervously, avoiding his stare.

"Is there a reason I shouldn't be?" he asked as he flung his coat at me. "Of course not, I'm just excited", I replied, hanging his coat where it's supposed to be. "Seriously?" he scoffed. "We'll get married soon after all", I said with a smile.

"Save the crap Hana, I'm starving", he said coldly and took his seat at the dinner table. I frowned slightly because of his rudeness, but still made my way towards the table to serve him. He started eating as soon as I took the lid off his plate.

Watching him eat made me feel calm and less anxious, so I decided to tell him something I wanted to tell him a long time ago. "Um…Devon?" I called, feeling a bit nervous and fiddling with my fingers. He said nothing, but munched on his food quietly.

"Two days ago, while you were in the shower, your phone rang..." I said before slowly stepping away from the table. He stopped eating at this point, but he didn't even look at me. "... a lady called, and I picked it up", I concluded.

That was it!

This made him go crazy. In the twinkling of an eye, a glass flew past my head with full speed and broke into pieces. "How many times did I say not to pick my calls?" he asked furiously. I panicked. I used my hands to protect my face as he angrily charged towards me with a bloody injured fist. "I had no choice, it kept ringing", I said in defense, expecting the worse that could happen.

"That's not an excuse!" he thundered before pulling my hair roughly and pushing me to the wall. "I promise, it won't happen again", I managed to whisper as tears escaped from my eyes. I could see the rage and anger in his eyes. He was certainly not happy at all. I instantly regretted it.

"It better not"

I heaved a sigh of relief as he let go of me and barged into our shared bedroom. "What about the food?" I asked before he closed the door shut, but in return, I got cold, dead silence. I broke down in tears as I slowly sat down on the ground and began to pick up the broken shards of glass from the floor.

Yeah, I got cuts on my fingers and bruises on my wrist while I cleaned up the mess, but it didn't hurt as much as Devon did and has been doing to me for the past two years. He abused me both verbally and physically, but I had to endure it all and remain patient while trying to change him.

I tried. Didn't I?
