Synopsis

Chapter 1 - First of Many

Starvation. That's all the young man within the clearing among ruins could feel. The absolute pure feeling of hunger. The NEED to feed on... ANYTHING. Down on his knees and his hands. Panting.

"Hah, hah, hah," the continuous short breaths of a young man that had been running for days in these ruins of a bygone age. He had already lost count of the sleepless nights he has had since falling here. Looking at the young man, one would see that he was on the edge of death.

The young man couldn't be considered fit either based on how his physique is. While not obese, he was not skinny or toned either. He was of medium build although the kind that was a little above weight standards, with wide shoulders, the young man would also be considered short among his peers.

That would be the case though if he had been in his previous state before coming here. Starvation can do a lot to a human body. His skin color had paled in his plight while being down here. Considering the fact that his normal skin color was one of olive colored skin, that would say a lot.

His black eyes were also sunken, showing the weariness of someone that had not let down his guard once and maintained high alert. Tried to at least. Though now it was different. He was at the end of what his body could give, stamina wise.

It hurt to breathe at this point. "Snap," the sound of twigs breaking is heard ahead of him. Right where the young man had been running towards.

Wearily, the young man lifted his head to come face to face with the beast he had encountered earlier. Matted grey fur, and four legs. The beast growled with reddened eyes, and white foam coming from its long jaws. It was a familiar creature to most.

A wolf. One that was also starving. As indicated by its ribs showing, and teeth foaming. It's eyes red from what may have been days of going hungry. Growling at the young man, the wolf lowered itself to the ground, ready to pounce.

One would think the young man was too tired, starved, even weak, to do anything except be afraid as death creeped closer and closer. Yet his eyes, showed no fear in them. Just pure determination.

Evidently, the wolf was too starved to notice the glint in his eyes, as it pounced towards him. Jaws wide open. And in a last ditch effort, the young man in his torn, grey, dirty clothing, lifted his right hand that was concealing a rusty old meat carver knife, and swung it with the last of his strength.

"Arrrhg," the death cry of the wolf, was loud with the sound of blood gurgling as its throat was slit. Life draining from its eyes. The young man himself, did not lie to rest. Even after using all his strength. Newfound energy was awakened as he threw himself at the corpse of the wolf. Eagerly cutting and tearing at the dead body of the creature. Tearing a piece off, he shoved part of its lungs into his mouth.

Ignoring the feeling of hardiness and the taste of iron within the blood, he forced himself to swallow. Filling just the smallest bit of his hunger, as it entered his stomach. The young man's eyes glowed a faint white color.

A smile forms on his tired and unhealthy looking face. "Finally," he says as he faints to the ground, with contentment expressed on his face. And to be honest. I was content. That's right. The young man is me. And finally after 16 years of life, I had done it. I gained recognition. Finally the system had awaken in me too.

My eyes had already been close to closing at this point as darkness swam into my vision. It didn't matter that the ground beneath my feet started to rumble. All that was registered in my head before complete darkness was a single question, "What's a title?"
