Chapter 1 - Prologue: Attack

The woods were dim and coated with fog…the worst time for him to be running through it. Yet, he had no choice; it was that or die to that creature, whatever it was. He could feel it's presence, hear its panting as it ran after him. It's growl was like a wolf's, but far more unnatural. He could also feel the eyes; eyes that showed the monster wanted nothing more than to tear him limb from limb. But he had no time to think about it. All he could think at the moment was, "Run, you idiot!"

The 'he' in question was a young man, about 18, with dark, spiky hair, tanned light skin, and caramel colored eyes. He wore what was a dark, plain shirt and jeans that were now torn in several places from when the creature had taken him by surprise and would have ripped his throat out had he not flashed his phone's light into its eyes.

Suddenly, the boy was forced to stop as a narrow cliff appeared out of the fog, with the walls stretching to either side of him. Whipping around, he then saw the monster behind him, snarling in anticipation; it knew he was trapped.

Cade now had a good glimpse of the beast: it looked like a very large dog, but with blood red eyes, razor teeth, and fur that was thick, almost like grass. Pulling out his phone, Cade turned the flashlight on and aimed it at the monster.

"Back! Get back!" he shouted. The beast recoiled, angered by the light as it scurried back and forth, trying to avoid it. Cade felt a boost of confidence and started walking towards it, continually shining the light.

Suddenly, the beast roared in anger, a sound that sounded like a cross between a tiger and a bear, and lunged forward, swiping Cade's body and sending him slamming into the rock wall, where he slumped to the ground, dazed. As he slowly passed out, he could hear the beast approaching, then what suddenly sounded like a small scuffle; another monster perhaps?

When the fighting stopped, Cade only had time to look up and see two different figures, one looking more bestial while the other was definitely human, approach him and look down before his vision went black.
