Chapter 5 - The Lecture Gone Wrong

" In gaseous phase, amines act as Lewis base because the nitrogen atom can donate its lone pair of electrons to an empty orbital found in the atom of another molecule... " The Chemistry professor droned on to the two hundred students in the lecture hall. Down at the lecture seats, my eyes darted to the clock on the wall for the hundredth time. Ten more minutes till I'm out of this place to freedom! Many students were getting restless as they fidgeted about their seats. Two seats away from me, two guys from another class were whispering loudly. They seemed to be quarreling.

A male student with a bob haircut and square spectacles whispered loudly, " Don't you dare insult my family! You know nothing about me. You can attack and bully me all you want, just don't get my family into this!"

"Oh yeah? Sorry mate, the mouth's mine. I can say whatever I want, you nerdy boy. Grow up will you," hissed another male student. This time, the one speaking donned a neat crew cut. He smirked.

Their conversation was too loud not to hear. Upon closer look , I noticed that it was him. The notorious bully from our batch, Dominick, infamous for picking on lean guys. I secretly thought that Dominick picked on them because he was jealous since he was big sized.

"Haizz. Just my luck," I cursed under my breath. If I had not been assigned this seat, I would not encounter these two "hooligans". Beside me, the whispers grew louder. I was getting uncomfortable. My heart raced as I feared what was going to happen next. I willed for time to pass faster so that the lecture would end and I could escape from this scary place. Unbeknown to me, H was sitting two seats diagonally behind me observing the situation. His dark brows furrowed and his eyes narrowed in displeasure.

"ARGHH! STOP IT DOMINICK!" The nerd guy shouted, his face red with anger. He stood up and swiped his stationery and books on his table towards Dominick at full force. Pens and papers scattered all over the floor. The professor stopped talking. All of a sudden, the lecture hall was dead silence. Everyone turned to look at the two students who were fighting.

At this instant, all I heard was the loud thud of my heartbeat against my ears. I was breathless and sweating profusely. I swear I was about to faint any moment. The 'fight or flight' response system which people spoke of when we're in danger -- it did not work. I was scared shitless that I just stood rooted to the same place, back stiff as a rock. I forgot to run away. I felt a sharp pain at my arm. Still I did not react. Everything was a blur.

Thud. Thud. Thud. The sound of footsteps. I could see a body moving towards me in my peripheral vision. Someone grabbed my hand forcefully. "Shit. You're hurt." the person said. I looked down at my arm. Crimson red blood was oozing out. My face turned pale at the sight of blood. My knees buckled and the person tightened his grip of me. The person pulled me towards him and led me out of the lecture hall, leaving behind the chaos and dozen pairs of eyes staring at us. I felt dizzy, so I focused hard on the back view of the person. The familiar silhouette. That was when I saw. The person who saved me, it was H.
