"They aren't wrong when they say Djalls have brains in each of their boughs," Kruma said, his voice quivering under the soul-crushing pressure. The words hung heavy in the air, each syllable wrapped in the oppressive weight of his situation. He could feel the tendrils of the djall's presence creeping into his mind, dark and invasive, like something alive, something ancient. The ground beneath him seemed to throb with the pulse of the creature's massive form, and his heart thudded in time with it. He was trapped, his usual steadiness slipping away with each breath.
