Chapter 2 - What now walks in the dark

Somewhere in the distance, a chorus of roars tore into the silence, Making those that heard them shiver with a primal fear. Having heard the roars, Rook shot up, adrenaline pumping through his veins. He instinctively knew that he needed to get away from the windows out of sight and make no sound. He ran to the door to the basement, threw it open, stepped through, and shut the door behind him with a light click.

With almost no light to see by, he had to wait for his eyes to adjust. Going down the stairs, he slowly made his to his room. Once within his room, he sat down in his bed and grabbing the headphones from his computer. He started up the emergency radio his father demanded he keeps at his home, put on the headphones, and listened.

"*static* citizens of the united states The department of defense implores you to stay in your home, stay out of sight, and keep quiet." "This is not a drill. I repeat. "*static*" is not a drill. Stay in your homes. The life forms are dangerous and extremely hostile. In the event, you see one of the life forms. run."

Rooks mind revolted at the people telling others to run, not because he was stubborn or brave but because he knew it was wrong.

"Wait, how do I know it was wrong? I know nothing of these beings." then he remembered that instinct that compelled stay hidden and quiet so much he ran down to his basement room with no windows.

Knowing there was no way to understand this yet, nor any way to leave without threat, he decided to lay down and sleep. Waking up to the sound of screams, Rook felt like his heart was one pump away from jumping right out of his chest. Once again, an instinct compelled him to help whoever was out there. Unable to resist, Rook hopped up, shot out of his door, up the stairs, and out of his home. Standing just outside his door, looking towards his lawn, he saw one of the things that made that roar for the first time.

He could only call it a terror. It was extremely pale almost, chalk white, vaguely humanoid in shape with disproportionately long limbs. Its torso and head were the same, sizes as a human's, and it had no features whatsoever hair, eyes, mouth, ears. They were nowhere on the terror's body. It walked on all fours towards the people from who he heard the screams.

Rooks instincts were telling him to wait. He felt his body tense. He then saw a split open where the mouth would be on a human on the thing's face, opening to reveal row after row of teeth and flesh so black that in the moonlit night, it looked like just a shadow with teeth on its face. It seems this was what he was waiting for, as it was at this point that his instincts screamed at him to run and attack the terror.

Suddenly everything went black except for living things around him. the next few minutes were blank for Rook, all he can remember is seeing the terror, and then it was dead beside him, his arms covered in tar-like blood and the two people women he realized passed out on the ground.

He could hear roars in the distance. He knew it was best to get them out of there very quickly. Picking the two women up his carried them into his home, closed the front door, and down into the basement. He set them down onto the couch, put a blanket over them, and sat in a chair on the other side of the room.

"It's going to be a long night." He mumbled to himself
