Chapter 5 - Masturbation is Sinful

SELF-SEXUAL GRATIFICATION

SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 5:27-30

Matt.5.27 - "You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'Do not commit adultery.'

Matt.5.28 - But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Matt.5.29 - So if your eye--even if it is your good eye--causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

Matt.5.30 - And if your hand--even if it is your stronger hand--causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

Self-sexual gratification is the act of stimulating ones self sexually to reach orgasm. This is also known as "solo Sex". Another common term for self-sexual gratification is "masturbation". The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines masturbation as "erotic stimulation especially of ones own genital organs commonly resulting in orgasm and achieved by manual or other bodily contact exclusive of sexual intercourse, by instrumental manipulation, occasionally by sexual fantasies, or by various combination of these agencies". Some people are of the view that satisfying yourself sexually is not sinful because they have not had penetrative sex. This issue of self-sexual gratification has become a controversy even among Christians since the Bible does not explicitly state that it is sinful.

From the passage read, Jesus says that "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart". In the preceding verse, Jesus was talking about the commandment "You shall not commit adultery" Fornication applicable). Jesus tells them that the commandment did not only apply to sexual intercourse but also the secrets of the heart and what the eye looks at. The Bible does not explicitly state that self-sexual gratification is a sin, but there is no doubt that the actions that usually lead to that are sinful. Self-sexual gratification is most often the result of lustful thoughts resulting from the watching pornographic materials and/or fantasizing about the opposite sex. We should therefore be careful and not allow this evil to overcome us.
