Chereads / Mask Hunters / Chapter 2 - Entry 1

Chapter 2 - Entry 1

I felt the low glow of the sun on my skin. My aching bones dragged behind me as I pulled myself forward off of my bed. I'm not very fond of mornings. I'm not too fond of a lot of things, actually… I like to say I just have specific taste. I can't really say what I was thinking this morning. I can say it's of no importance. My time, energy, and focus was spent on existing. Life is just such a pain in itself sometimes.

The glow that I awoke was gone by the time I was out the door. Instead I had to deal with blaring yellow light in my eyes. Actually It's no big deal honestly. I don't mind and never did mind walking, it's not even the walking I hate. I thought as something hard and rigid made contact with my back.

No, it's something else that gets on my nerves, or should I say someone else. My body fell forward shoving my face down into the gravel of the road.

"How does the ground taste?" A rough voice said

I didn't bother looking up to the figure. I just laid limp and hoped he would leave.

"Hey he's talkin to you."

another voice said. I felt his cold hands on the back of my head as he pushed my head deeper into the gravel.

Probably one of his friends, but it didn't matter. I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of answering so I gave no answer.

"Are you really so weak you can't get up from a little stone?"

It was far from a little stone and was easily a couple pounds and, as a matter of fact I could get up I just chose not to.

"Let's go, this loser isn't worth it" the main guy said as they walked away. His hand pulled up from my skull leaving me in the rocks with a few scratches. It seemed there were a total of 4 people even though 2 never got involved.

Thump

Thump

Thump

The sounds of their shoes against the gravel made as I heard them walk away. I quickly got up after they left and took a different root through a more vegetated part of the land. The sun was rising and my pace needed to be picked up especially since my time was limited. I fell farther and farther into the forest although it's a shortcut and it was way faster than following the road.

It's dangerous going deep into the forest alone..

It's dangerous going into the forest in general. Too bad I don't care..

"Screeeeeeetchhh" "eeeeii"

You guessed it, blood sucking arthropods. Beatles that suck your blood. Much worse than the common tick. Probably at least ten times the size as well. Completely harmless on their own but in hives they are a much different story. It's good for me that.. I'm not their target. Not this time at least. I thought to myself.

An injured deer seemed much more appetizing to them. I was there to stick around to watch. So I will never know what happened to that deer. Maybe that deer got up and fought its fate, maybe in that moment it gathered the energy to stand and run. maybe it died that day without anything to show for its life.

My destination was in front of me a little ways beyond the trees it had taken longer than I intended. I'm glad I left early before I met a handful of others. My tracks stopped in a sudden movement almost knocking me off the base of the tree I was jumping to. A large chunk of the forest was burned. This was the point I left the edge of the forest. Whatever was going on here I had no interest in.

After not so careful consideration I took a left and continued on the gravel road with a few others. Just after one sharp turn I felt my heart shatter as I look at the ash filled air. The forest.. it was also burnt but I hadn't imagined that the fire had spread so violently to have reached so close to civilization. The stones that were once grey where black from the thick layers of ash covering them. The air was thick and hard to breath. No trees or buildings remained. Including the fountain cellar.

Just as long as humans have been around there have been mask holders. Creatures not yet understood. What we do know is limited and boring. In short humans greatest enemies, humanoid creatures that possess supernatural abilities humankind was almost wiped out indefinitely by.

But, obviously we are still here. Thanks to a hunter who foraged a weapon to fight back with. so, humanity might just have a fighting chance. Shards of a large crystal found at The core of each of our lands there are a total of 5 different crystals. For five different nations Each crystal can bring a human great power but there's a catch, most can only match with 1 crystal and those who can match with 2 are considered gifted, not to mention rare. Every human is born matched to a crystal. Being matched to a crystal isn't the hard part, it's gaining the skill to control it. And those who become devoured in it instead of having proper training well lets just say you don't hear from them.
