Chapter 23 - Exiled demons

Team 70 only had 3 hours of sleep, and it was 7 am. When they woke up, they found out John regained consciousness a few minutes ago. Once they were in the same room, Moondust came close to John and asked him if he was ok, and John simply narrowly nodded.

"If you are ok, can you explain to us who you are, and why those mermaids were after you?" Moondust asked.

"What do you mean you al~" before he could finish his sentence, he saw his sister come in the room. That is when he understood he couldn't hide anymore.

"Well, that day I was taken by the rebels, that's true, but they saw that I had potential to be useful, so they used me. They taught me how to be a statesman, and with the help of other rebels in the government, I became one in the section of student power development.

However, every week they needed a sacrifice. They never told me why, but they were preparing something big and umm... how can I say this, y-you were this week's sacrifice, but I failed to bring you to the river when the powerful mercenary was present."

"Wait, do you mean those mermaids were mercenaries?" Alexa asked.

"Of course, mermaids are exiled demons, and every evil demon becomes mercenaries. I failed to follow the plan, now they are here to kill me."

"Well, you're safe now, we got rid of the mermaids." Alexa put her hand on his shoulder as a sign of comfort, but something was still startling him.

He frowned as he looked down and held his blanket tight and said: "It's not that easy, what just happened now was an act of treason from me. It is most likely they send the mercenary who was supposed to kill you finish his job, and include me in it."

"Who is that mercenary?" Jason asked.

"His name is Cobra, from the exiled snake demon clan," John replied.

Mitsuki widened his eyes and slightly dropped his jaw when he heard the name. Moondust saw Mitsuki's sudden change of mood, but she didn't want to cause any more trouble or secrets revealed. She decided to ask him later when no one would be there.

"He is very strong and uses his cobra ability perfectly. He has pale skin, white eyes, black hair and a black ninja's suit with a black mask." It was very clear that John himself was frightened about the demon, but was he that dangerous.

"Then we must get going." Moondust said walking back to their room to pack the small things they had left.

Mitsuki on the other hand, rather than going back to his room, waited for them outside. There was something about that certain cobra that was unsettling him so much.

Once they were all done packing, his sister and John had a 30 minutes conversation inside, and John came out with a flying wheelchair that could be controlled through high tech glasses that get information from your brain on where you would like to go and at what speed.

"I think we are ready, it might be more secure to follow the road instead of adventuring ourselves out of it..." John was going through a map and led the way as they were leaving the city.

"Hey Mr Luke, I'm wondering, why would you choose to make us a sacrifice. I mean, you surely knew that we would be accompanied by a ranger." Jason was still sensing mystery in John's eyes, and at this point, even the smallest secrets might affect the mission.

John looked at Jason with a thoughtful look and said: "I'm not the one who says who to sacrifice, but they wanted to kill you in particular Jason."

Jason was not affected by what he said and continued walking along the road with his hands in his pocket.

"Why Jason?" Moondust asked concerned.

John lifted his shoulders to show that he didn't know why, and looked at the map one more time.

"Oh crap!" John checked the map and realized they were going to take days to get to their destination, however, if they take a shortcut through the prairie, it might take about one day and a half.

"I think we must cross the prairie..." He said in a disappointed tone, "It won't take more than two days for Cobra to find us, so taking a shortcut is the best option."

Everyone agreed, as they crossed the road and walked right into the prairie. A few hundred meters later, they realized the prairie was foggy. They could barely see anything, but it didn't concern them because as long as they had the map, they were all good.

This map was special because it showed the location of the one holding it, so you could see where you were on the map, and what danger was around you. There was no risk they fall into a lake or get a surprise attack by an animal.

"Mr John, I would like to know, how are you going to survive if as you say there are so many traitors part of the government?" Moondust asked.

"I have a list of them, so I'll be able to take them down, but for that, I must get to the destination." He replied.

'So this mission will also cut the link between rebels and the government. They will have less information about critical situations happening in the country.' Moondust thought, 'but there is still something wrong in all this, he seems so calm all of a sudden, what happened to his feat of dying.'

It was clear to everyone that Mr John Luke was a big wuss. He was scared of any threat, so how come he is not scared to be attacked in such a foggy place. There was still some mystery in everyone's eyes concerning John, how can he be so calm in this situation, given how scared of a person he is. Is there something he is still hiding?
