"Well, I was just looking at how dirty your uniform was," grace tried to deflect as she spoke as smoothly as possible. Sadly, she was always a bit too expressive. It was always a bit hard for her to hide her feelings as the other two in the room noted with level looks.
"Yeah, sorry princess, but that ain't gonna cut it. You were looking at more than dirt," Oaguz called her out on it on the spot. Karita coughed into her hand.
"I believe what this unrefined... GOBLIN, is trying to say is that your interests seemed more thorough than necessary," She added," though I must admit. You 'maids' have a tendency to get a little too dirty for your profession if you ask me."
"Well, SORRY! It's not like we trained for this or somethin'. Plus, what'dya expect to happen when we have to clean things too big for us? You want this place clean then we need to get dirty to do it with all the climbing we have to do," Oaguz defended her friends and herself.
"Well..." Karita thought for a moment. She seemed ready to make a snide comment but thought better on it. She let out a sigh," I guess you do have a point. A proper education and aptitude are required. In this case, you size is a problem... I guess I could commend you on being able to do some of what you've done so far."
"Yeah, it's too bad that we can't make self cleaning clothes," Grace commented as she looked over the dirty uniform once more and noted there were already a few tears in it," Not to mention making them more durable or at least self repairing."
Karita paused at this as she considered the idea. It would be a very useful thing indeed. Just selling something like that commercially would make quite a bit of money. Even better, such an application of magic could benefit in other fields if applied to golems and armor. Golems especially would benefit due to the expenses involved. Golems had a major vulnerability which limits some of there uses. The main of which is combat. The reason for this is due to the magic flow and intricate runic inscriptions and formulae. Once damaged, the flow is interrupted and the corresponding parts go inactive or the whole thing shorts down due to runic cascade failure. It was because of this that golems are built with redundancy and heavily armored so that they can keep operating. The downside is that it results in on bulky, heavy designs that are also slower. Even worse is that the most common metals available for mass production are quite weak. One of the few exceptions to this is mithral. Sadly, this material is hard to come by on this continent. Which is another reason for the current wars. Finally, the last weakness to golems and the one that makes this so interesting is the ability to repair a golem without having to reset the runes and spell work. Currently, you had to redo these if you wished to repair them due to magic harmony laws. When it comes to magic, it all has to be done at the same time as one spell. Different spells coming into contact with one another causes a disharmony and rejection. In fact, this is these laws are the basis for counter-spells. There have been a few breakthroughs on this front, but far and few between. The main ones are the interchangeable and removable control systems and cores. The latter is a simple concept as it only involved creating a self contained network that only gave off the energy that the runes were designed to feed o. In other words, mana without intent. Intent is believed to be the main reason for disharmony. It was this discovery that resulted in studies that brought about the others. Sadly, the solutions found could only be applied on a limited scale as the designs required for this would result in bulkier and even slower designs. Making something that actually repaired itself could reduce all of this and make truly amazing designs.
"Umm, Karita, are you ok?" Grace asked as Oaguz elbowed Karita's leg no so gently, She jumped and then scowled as the feeling in her leg registered. She'd have to admit the creature was definitely stronger than she looked.
"Sorry about that, I was just thinking about what you said. It would actually make a great field of study if it were possible, but I would have to spend quite a bit of time just to even come up with how to make something like that and there's the lack of facilities and materials to even test such a thing," the former guild mage and R&D hopeful ranted.
"I don't see what's the big deal," Oaguz commented," It shouldn't be that hard to make something fix itself. Living things do that naturally all the time."
"While that is true, it is hardly a perfect method as you should remember scarring and other injuries that leave a lasting injury," Karita shot back," Not only that, but you would have to find a way to replicate the process and make a rune sequence that could not only notice damage, but also hold the magics in place as it reforms the corresponding, damaged sequences. Not to mention what would happen if something were lost. There are a lot of runes that would need to be applied for this to work."
It was as she looked at a confused goblin that she realized she was talking about some of the more advanced elements of magic with a barbarian. Said creature blinked a couple times before she shook the cobwebs out and asked a question," What's this crap about runes, if this stupid tattoo is translating it right, it sounds like you're talking about talismans."
"Talismans? You mean like those silly trinkets fools carry around with them?" Karita chuckled at the foolishness," I'm talking about anchored by physical means. Patterns and formulae, sometimes if ancient words, are used to create visual and physical castings that anchor and keep a spell in place on an object."
"yeah, talismans. We something just like that with paper and ink," the blue haired goblin corrected HER," Not to be confused with charms. Seriously though, why do you need that?"
The princess's magical aid froze at this. She could not believe that the goblin was somehow understanding this. Even more, she was holding a conversation on the matter. However, her knowledge seemed to be lacking," That's simple..." She drawled," It's because those are needed to keep any spell attached to a physical object for a lengthy time. Even more, a spell like that would be quite difficult to proper set and cast. You would almost HAVE to have it done in runes as such a spell would be too complex to cast otherwise!"
"Then just create a spirit and anchor it with the job instead!" the smart mouthed goblin screamed back in annoyance," If a task is too complex for a talisman, you should be binding a spirit willing to perform the task instead! They can think on their own well enough to perform a task given to them so long as the sage forged the essence with enough sentience and imparts the needed knowledge! So I ask, WHY are you using such overly complex methods of handling your spells!?"
Karita was shocked by two things at that moment. The main thing was that this goblin also seemed to know magic and may even know some magic she wasn't even aware of. The second thing," I have to say, it's quite shocking to hear you talk properly."
The little goblin paled as she clamped her hands over her mouth for a second in shock before lowering them and sighing," Great, the boss is gonna have a field day with me over this. Look, I had somethin' of a formal upbringing in the spiritual arts. Thing is, I gave it all up to pursue a different path in life and haven't heard from them in years since. Point is, my talking made me stick out a lot back then and the boss helped me get used to talking like this to keep us on the down low."
"Umm, sorry? But I'm a little lost," spoke a dazed princess," Besides all of that magic and ghost talk, why did you stop studying?"
Karita frowned at this as Oaguz smiled and puffed up her chest," Well that's easy! I decided I wanted to be more than a priestess and wanted to become a hero!"
Karita was now massaging her temple. She was starting to feel a headache coming. However, there were farm more pressing matters to attend to other than her discomfort," That does it, Princess, you and I are going to get you a basic understanding of magic by the end of the month or so help me! As for you GOBLIN, I want you to teach me what you can about this magic of yours. If it's even half as interesting as it sounds, we might be able to do a few things. Even though we might be skirting the law, but should technically be within our rights. Especially with the princess's backing!"
Karita had wonderful plans to enact. Wonderfully magical plans to bring about. It could be a start at least.
