Chereads / The Dark Mark / Chapter 38 - The Strange Lunch Incident

Chapter 38 - The Strange Lunch Incident

Ojero stared at Roger, his mind trying to comprehend if that really just happened.

"It is the power of a mythic familiar, master. Do not feel shocked at this paltry excuse for power until you see my own strength."

With everyone becoming distracted with Rogers' antics, Professor Erica shook her head.

"Okay kids, that will be all for today. Get off to the cafeteria and feed your faces. Tonight I want you all to think of a painful memory and share it with your familiar. It will build trust and understanding."

No one responded to her, prompting her to stamp her left foot, and a shockwave reverberated around the entire arena, snapping everyone back to reality.

"EVERYONE. GO. NOW."

This made everyone start moving, some a little more annoyed at this than others.

During all this Rogers face had turned a little red out of embarrassment. He never meant to draw such attention.

He quickly unsummoned his familiar, who promptly vanished in a red cloud.

Looking around, he noticed Ojero looking at him from the side, and Roger quickly moved towards him.

"That was a pretty impressive display. Do you usually decide to fly on the massive fire birds into the sky and leave everyone else wondering what you are doing? Or is this just a once-in-a-month type deal?"

"Ha. Ha. Very funny. You know very well this was new to me. She was the one who asked me to do it, something about making a point. No clue what that was about."

"Mythic familiars are quite prideful, master. It is my belief that the Phoenix was upset for not being able to sense me very well, and wanted to provide a show of strength."

'Familiars seem to be very human for not being human at all.'

"What are humans but for familiars, master? You classify yourselves as something else, but familiars are nothing but creatures from another domain."

Ojero remained silent at this.

"So, shall we go get some food? It might have looked easy, but flying that fast and that high up is enough to make anyone tired."

"Sure, we better hurry though."

The two young boys then started running across the arena towards the stairs as Erica watched them.

'Those two kids have a lot in store for their future. It isn't right for such young ones to be cursed with such strong powers, it will only force them to mature and adapt at an age most can barely think at.'

Erica shook her head as she started walking around the now empty arena, just trying to clear her head. When she arrived at the spot where the pillar of fire had risen from, she stared at the charred and crystallized ground.

For a moment she just stood there, staring at it, before she slowly walked up the stairs and through the portal back to the academy.

During this, Ojero and Roger were walking through the academy's halls towards the cafeteria.

The gray ring on Ojero's finger was still slightly glowing, which no one seemed to notice.

Soon they arrived at the large room which hosted dozens of tables, each with eight chairs placed around it. A few tables were full of young children laughing and engaging in conversation as they ate.

On the wall opposite the entrance was a large rectangular window from which a few of the school staff were serving the students food on wooden trays.

Roger and Ojero quickly went up to these staff, taking their trays before moving to one of the empty tables near the right wall.

Sitting down, Ojero studied his food. It was a good sized cut of mutton, some tomatoes, and a jug of milk to go with it all.

Everyone in their first year had the same food, although some heard that the seniors were given a larger variety of main courses to pick from.

Both of the young teens started to eat their food, neither starting conversation, and were almost finished when they heard another tray clatter next to Ojero.

Roger and Ojero quickly looked over to see a certain blonde haired girl sit down next to them.

Ojero sighed as he turned back to his food.

"Hey Litany. Nice of you to join us." Ojero said in a monotonous voice.

Roger, however, couldn't even speak as he stared at Litany, his cheeks glowing redder by the minute.

Ojero saw this and gave him a quick kick under the table making him look away before she noticed.

"So I have met Ojero before, but who are you exactly? I am Litany " She said while looking over at Roger.

Roger stuck out his hand slowly, unable to meet her gaze, as he responded.

"Roger Ryall. Pleasure to meet you."

They shook hands, but Roger pulled away only a second after they started, which confused Litany, but she turned her focus towards her food.

Nothing interesting happened for a few minutes until a young looking man in a white robe stormed into the cafeteria and rushed towards the staff serving at the counter.

No one heard much of anything he said to the staff, but the word "Tehirgut" was yelled out a few times.

A few minutes of talking later, the young man ran right back out of the cafeteria leaving many of the students confused.

However, as many were from noble families and had child tutors, they realized it had something to do with the frozen nation in the North known as Tehirgut.

Ojero, Roger, and Litany all knew of the nation, but had no clue what was happening that involved it.

Roger broke the silence saying, "It seems things have happened up in the snow."

"I wonder what it could be to get the teachers here so worked up. Tehirgut is far away from here." Litany responded with.

"Maybe a new war broke out?"

"I sure hope not, the last continent wide war cost way too many lives."

While Roger and Litany were talking, a very different conversation was occurring in Ojero's head.

"Something happened that shouldn't have, master. I felt it earlier but was unsure of it until now. Something has come from the snow that shouldn't have."

'What should I do then?'

"For now, nothing. However, we must prepa-"

The Night Demon stopped mid sentence, and Ojero felt some confusion and then shock come from it.

"I just felt another, master."

The Book of the Known Undead

Chapter 10: Basic Ghost

Basic Ghosts are the weakest of the Ghost family, but have their uses. They are immune to many kinds of physical items except for most metals. This has led them to be used often as political assassins, killing off queens and various royal family members to destabilize a nation before war.

Basic Ghosts are difficult to maintain and classified as rare creatures. Not many can be found, so should be used cautiously.
