Some people called it the beginning; some people called it the end. Due to the inability of people to come to a cohesive name, as stupid humans argue over ridiculous things at the worst of times, it was simply called the middle. That is until humanity finally settled down a bit and started calling it the Tempest instead.

Lightning flashed across the sky, but this was no ordinary storm. After all what kind of thunderstorm comes from space. A dark black mist with streaks of dark purple flooded the skies covering the entire planet. Cody felt his chest tighten. The street he was on was covered with people. He was in the center of a large city in Florida during tourist season after all. At first people just stared at the mist. Cody himself gawked at it like a ten year old seeing people kiss on the beach. Then the first area of the mist made human contact. The person fell to the ground writhing in pain and coughing blood then after a minute they lay completely still.

Cody and the surrounding masses ran in panic for the buildings. Cody slipped through a door and sighed in relief. He glanced back toward the outside. The mist, instead of stopping, went right through the glass. Nowhere was safe. Cody felt lightheaded and stumbled to the ground. He coughed blood dripping from the corner of his mouth. Would this be where he died? His last thoughts before he fell into the blackness were "That's weird my hands are glowing multiple colors and there is ice on the floor?"

In a mansion on the hill another boy of the same age was chatting casually with his cousins. Their extended family had gathered for their annual party. "Hey Connor let's…." the cousin's words were cut off as black mist like smoke filled the air. Connor would have called it smoke but it was freezing cold. He was surrounded by ice and his brother's hands across the room glowed white. His cousins displayed no oddities. Then he also collapsed.

Within an hour the entire Earth was covered and the streets were lined with bodies.
