Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

A bucket of water was poured on the sleeping figure, making her jolt up from her slumber. She sat upright looking at the person who she was supposed to call 'mother'. Her 'mother' had a pissed expression on her face.

"YOU PIECE OF SH!T WHERE IS MY BREAKFAST" Her 'mother' yelled pulling her hair. She didn't say a word, not wanting to piss the already angry woman more. "Well, you better hurry up or it'll be worse" Her mother said leaving the room.

Amara sighed getting up, this wasn't anything new for her. She was used to it long before. She tied her hair in a messy bun and walked towards the kitchen to make breakfast for Maya. She called her mother by her name, she was forced to do so.

Amara checked the fridge and saw they were mostly out of ingredients, there were some eggs in there. They had some bread left on the shelves 'this will do for now' she thought. She made eggs and toast for breakfast.

Amara set Maya's plate on the table and ate her own in the kitchen quickly, so that Maya doesn't see her eating or else she would be beaten again. And the last thing Amara needed was a beating, her body was already sore from yesterday night's beatings.

She washed their plates, did the laundry and other chores. Once she was finished, she went to her room to get ready for her job. She did not have much clothes. Her wardrobe consisted of three oversized t shirts, an old hoodie and two worn out jeans. Once she was dressed she grabbed her almost broken phone and headed to the café for her shift.

She had taken two part time jobs. She worked at the café till noon and at a regular convenience store from 7 pm. She helped out in an orphanage in the evenings. She cared for the children at the orphanage and they adored her.

The orphanage was very dear to her afterall she had spent her early childhood there. She almost wished she wouldn't have been 'adopted' and remained at the orphanage.

She entered the café, her co-worker Mike was done with his shift and was waiting for her to arrive. He nodded at her and left the café. The bell above the door chimes indicating a customer's arrival.

She looked up "Hi, what can I get you?"

"an expresso please" the lady said. Amara nodded and made her an expresso "That'll be $2.59" she said handing it to the lady.

She continued with her work. Today she had to leave early since it was Jess's birthday. She wanted to surprise the kid by visiting early with a cake and presents for him. She had saved some money for the occasion. She always did that for the children at the orphanage.

She had already ordered a cake so the only thing left was to buy the presents. She could not keep them at the place she called 'home'. Maya would damage it or probably sell it. Sighing, she entered the gift shop and bought a cute shirt and a pair of cute socks for him. 'He would love it' with that thought she exited the shop.

She picked up the cake and may her way towards the orphanage. When she reached the orphanage, she made her way to the dining room. She placed the cake and presents on the table. She placed the candles on the cake and lit it. The caretaker and other children were all gathered in the dining room.

Then, the caretaker of the orphanage came with Jess. The said boy's eyes lit up after seeing this. He smiled brightly and hugged Amara. Amara smiled ruffling his hair. "Let's cut the cake!" She announced. Jess nodded and picked up the knife.

He cut the cake and took the first slice and brought it near amara's lips. She smiled and took a bite, making him take a bite too from the same. She then cut the cake in slices and gave it to everyone present there.

After enjoying the cake, they all gave him presents. Though they were orphan and poor they had each other and that was all that mattered. They knew how to be happy and even though they couldn't buy nice things they gave presents from their hearts. The children then started playing.

She checked her phone, she had to leave since it took a while to reach the convenience store. She was about to go when she felt a tug at her tee shirt, she looked down to see Jess. He smiled "Thank you so much" he said. Amara bent down and gave him a peck on each cheeks "Your welcome Jess" she smiled. She left the orphanage and made her way towards the convenience store.

She entered the store and greeted her co workers. She took her spot at the front and waited for the customers to arrive. A suspocious looking man in a black arrived, he grabbed the items he needed and walked towards Amara. She scanned the items putting them in a bag and told the amount to the man. He handed her the money and walked away. She continued with her work.

After her shift was over, she exited the store and proceeded to go home. When she reached her house she checked whether her mother was there or not but there wasn't any sound coming. Amara shrugged and unlocked the door, she quietly closed it and tiptoed towards her room hoping her mother didn't wake up. She was by now familiar with the creaks caused by the floor so she did her best to avoid those.

But fate was never her side, she was pulled by her hair to the middle of the room. "Where were YOU!?" Maya yelled. "Where is my Money!?" she kicked her in the stomach but Amara didn't say a word. "Why did you come so late, you good for nothing sh!t" Maya said beating and kicking her. When stopped when she got tired, and went to her room with yet another bottle of alcohol.

Amara laid there still for a minute, she then slowly got up and limped towards her room. She carefully laid down on the bed. She didn't cry, she was used to this long ago. "If only you weren't like this, I wouldn't have to stay out this late working to meet basic needs" Amara thought referring to Maya's previous question. Amara closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

This was Amara Jones' daily life.
