Chapter 55 - Plots And Schemes 3

Still recess, Cleave Hills High School cafeteria.

"Here are the pills, put them in his drink. In about four hours, he'll begin to act strange and violent" A guy hands Gustavo some drugs.

GUSTAVO: Just what I needed. (He collects it and the guy leaves. He then glances at Elvis and Gwen who are having snack at a table far off) Why isn't she hanging out with Eric anymore? Did they have a quarrel? Whatever, good for me. (He motions towards their table)

Gwen sees him approaching, the expressionless look on her face might tell that she's not exactly excited to see him.

GUSTAVO: You mind if I join you two? (Already taking a seat opposite them)

ELVIS: Yeah, sure. (He looks down at Gustavo's hands and finds them empty) Where's your food tray? Why haven't you bought anything? What are you having?

GUSTAVO: Don't worry about me, I'll get a milkshake later.

GWEN: You love milkshakes?

GUSTAVO: Who doesn't?

GWEN: Right. Too bad I'll have to be cutting down on my intake from now on seeing that I'm part of the cheerleading squad.

ELVIS: I'm not really a fan of milkshakes, just give me some juice boxes and I'm good. (Taking a sip from his straw can)

Gustavo manages to distract them both in order to drop the pills in Elvis's drink. He excuses himself from their table and leaves the cafeteria. At the door, he spots Eric coming. He smiles, seeing that he's about to kill a second bird with the same stone.

GUSTAVO: Dude, I wouldn't go in if I were you.

ERIC: I'm hungry and I wanna grab a bite.

GUSTAVO: If you go in there, you'll lose your appetite real quick, trust me.

ERIC: What's happening in there?

GUSTAVO: I can't believe he could do this to you.

ERIC: Do what? Who are you talking about?

GUSTAVO: I just can't believe it.

ERIC: Ermm... dude, recess would be over soon, I'm famished so I can't be having this conversation with you right now. We'll talk later. (He grabs the door knob, about to go in)

GUSTAVO: How could your brother do this to you? (Getting Eric's attention)

ERIC: My brother? (He pauses, releasing the door knob)

GUSTAVO: How could he steal Gwen from you?

ERIC: What the hell are you talking about?

GUSTAVO: You risked getting into trouble with Mrs Morgan by helping him out with his practical and this is how he pays you back? Man, that's straight up ungrateful.

ERIC: Why would Elvis try to steal Gwen from me? Dude, I don't have time for this.

GUSTAVO: You're not listening to me, are you? He's not 'trying' to steal her from you (making air quotes with his fingers) He has stolen her from you already.

ERIC: This is a bunch of crap.

GUSTAVO: You don't believe me? Elvis has been making a big fuss about her lately but I never took him serious until he told me about his feelings for her.

ERIC: Feelings? (Looking at Gustavo with surprise and skepticism) Are you making this shit up?

GUSTAVO: I'm not one to spread rumors. And hey, that's not all, I made it clear to him that you're in love with her so he'd back off...

ERIC: I'm not in love with...

GUSTAVO: Shut up, man! You suck at pretending. (Eric scoffs) Now guess what he replied me after I told him that.

ERIC: What?

GUSTAVO: He said that as long as you two haven't start dating, he'll do anything possible to have her.

ERIC: Lies. That doesn't sound like Elvis.

GUSTAVO: I won't argue, but I just wanna ask... has there been any awkward vibe between you two lately?

ERIC: My brother and I? (Gustavo nods) I doubt if there's been... hold on... at the Halloween party, the time he asked you about Gwen.

GUSTAVO: Oh, you observed that too?

ERIC: Yeah. And when I tried to find out why he asked about her, he lied. That was weird.

GUSTAVO: Why do you think he lied?

ERIC: I dunno, man. Why do people lie?

GUSTAVO: To cover up stuff... to act shady... that's why.

ERIC: I'm gonna go find Elvis, we need to talk.

GUSTAVO: That's exactly why I don't want you going in there. They're having lunch together, he and Gwen. I'm very sure you'd be displeased if you saw them together acting all cozy.

ERIC: I'm not displeased, I'm very... confused. With all what you've said.

GUSTAVO: I understand.

ERIC: Why should I believe all what you're telling me? (Giving him a stern look)

GUSTAVO: You don't have to believe me. Go see for yourself. Rotman valley, after school today.

ERIC: What's happening there?

GUSTAVO: They're going on their second date.

ERIC: Second date? (Amazed) And you know this how?

GUSTAVO: I overheard them talking.

ERIC: Overheard? Or eavesdropped?

GUSTAVO: Po-tay-toe, Po-tah-toe.

ERIC: A second date... hmm.

GUSTAVO: Oh, you didn't know about the first one? They had coffee at Dalton's café the previous Friday.

ERIC: That explains the brown stain on his shirt and the smile on his face when he came home. (He pauses) But how could Elvis do this to me? And why are you just telling me about this, Gus?

GUSTAVO: This was what I was afraid of, you calling me a liar. But keeping it from you wasn't an option so I had to let you know the truth because you're my friend.

ERIC: I dunno how to feel right now.

The bell rings!

ERIC: Oh, great! (He scoffs, looking defeated) Just what I needed. Recess is over already, thanks a lot for delaying me. Now I'd have to get back to class hungry... and angry. Great! (Walking away as the cafeteria door swings open and students begin to stroll out)

GUSTAVO: Poor thing. (Tossing a candy in the air and catching it with his mouth)
