Teresa smiled at Matthew as she heard his words of gratitude.
"I am the one grateful for your compliments. It's been a while since I don't cook for anyone, to be honest. I lost my talent after my husband died," she commented.
Matthew decided to keep quiet about that. He didn't want to get into sensible matters. She probably still mourned the death of her husband, Matthew could feel it, and not only that, he empathized with it.
'I know how it is to mourn people's death for a long time, never getting rid of this feeling. That's why I didn't complain about the porridge. It wasn't the best one I ate, though surely not the worst. When seeing this anxious expression of yours when giving me the bowl, I knew that something was strange there.'
Matthew was a quite perceptive person. He would grasp those small details in people's faces and actions when interacting with them. It wasn't something he did on purpose, though. It was just a habit since he needed to do it all the time.
