Edgar wanted to end the battle as fast as possible in order to prevent Alan to use that spell. After all, he knew very well about the spells of that man, despite feigning to be ignorant about it.
The problem with King's Pressure was that there was no way to avoid it. Such a spell couldn't be countered by someone who wasn't an Ascendant. Alan was definitely the worst person that they could ever fight against. His spells in general were difficult to deal with.

They didn't need to kill Alan at all, just delay him, but there was now the concern about his life.
