The old woman could still recall what happened on that fateful day. The day when the Ascendants came to get their debt paid by the residents of Refuge Sarah.
They helped to build the walls of their refuge and served as guards to fight against the Dreads. They were a group of mercenaries that helped different refuges and didn't settle anywhere for a long time at all. When they did as such, they stayed there just to rest for a while, then go to another place.
Refuge Sarah's refugees thought that they were kindhearted and would be gentle with them for empathy. After all, they knew better than anyone else the struggles that one needed to go through in the outside world. However, they weren't heroes, but just people who took advantage of the moments of weakness of poor people like those refugees.
