Susan got in shock once she heard Lopez's pained voice. In the darkness of the night, his voice seemed even more clear to her as her other senses were quite numbed. She was more attentive to her hearing and olfaction, naturally. The hint of sadness and frustration paired with anger and disgust in his tone of voice could be easily grasped by her.
Susan felt as if her heart was getting tightly squeezed. It was being squeezed by guilty. She knew that Clay was very cold when killing people but he was no crazy murderer. He just killed people that messed with him or her.
