Matthew knew very well that the bishop wouldn't play that game fair and square. He himself was playing dirt with him. Matthew used all the trumps that he had until that point, he had a firm basis to get everyone out of that place, however, the price to do it would be big.
The investigator felt like he was a weakling again, his mind wasn't working like in a moment ago. Every time he thought about getting out of that refuge without looking back, the images of kids playing through the streets passed through his mind. Not only kids but happy couples, women and men taking care of their houses or going to work, elders going to shop... His mind was tricking him into remembering the few times when happiness could be seen in the eyes of those refugees.
