They spent the rest of the night sleeping in the camp. The group passed several hours conversing with each other and getting to know each other better. In truth, they just talked about stories and adventures while Dean listened carefully with his eyes shining.
The boy always wanted to go out of Refuge Sarah to live the same adventures and have the same discoveries that those guys had. Now that he was hearing them, he could be sure that his dream wasn't too distant. There were people beside him that narrated a life filled with everything he ever wanted to do.
Nonetheless, the happiness and excitement to find himself in such an environment didn't have space in Dean's heart. Instead, he always felt somewhat dejected once those thoughts left his mind. The boy wanted to live his dream life and discover a lot from that curious world, but the safety of his family was the most important.
'I don't even know how they are now, or how they will be after these months of travel I will need to take to get to Refuge Sarah again...' From time to time, this type of thought came to his mind.
Luckily, Hector and Kevin were always talking nonstop in order to entertain the boy and make him forget about what happened. They tried to pretend that it all was a natural thing, but Dean could notice that they were just distracting him. That group comprehended how it was to pass from a Dread raid, those guys knew how it was to see someone dying in front of you.
As far as Dean told them, he got stuck inside the refuge for some time before he was teleported there. The Dread attack was already happening at this point, so most likely he saw everything. Even though he was so young, Dean came to know why Dreads were the most fearful enemy of humanity nowadays.
After the dinner to celebrate Dean's entrance to the group, and the storytelling, the group went to sleep. They set up a tent for the boy as well, so he would be able to rest alone.
When he was all by himself inside his tent, just the light of the campfire illuminating out there, Dean began to feel an emptiness on his chest. He didn't have much time to cry or complain since all those things happened, and even now it was difficult to take that such a situation appeared in his life.
It is always difficult to accept that something fictional, inconceivable even, began to make any harm or change around you. It seemed just like you were inside a movie or living a story that someone told long ago.
While sobbing silently, to not wake up the others, Dean began to think well about that matter.
'I still don't know a thing about this world. I would never imagine that it was so big. Out of Refuge Sarah, it seems that I am in another world. I wonder if I can adapt to this world, but then again, don't I have to?
'The only thing that humans always need to prioritize is their survival. I am alive now and want to keep alive, but for this sake, I need to get stronger. There are powerful Dreads out there that can come any time they want to make a banquet out of any refuge, after all. Is there anyone who can stop these Dreads? I don't think so...'
The feelings that Dean was having at that time served to remember him of something. He concentrated in his chest, hearing his heart beating while looking at the tent's canvas. That sight gave him the feeling of... of emptiness.
A flashback appeared on Dean's mind. It made him widen his eyes and lift his upper body. He stopped immediately to sob and looked to his own chest, putting his hand there firmly while gritting his teeth in astonishment and confusion.
'That's right... I don't know how I didn't remember it at all! Before waking up in the middle of that invasion, something more happened. There was that strange and uncomfortable feeling coming from my chest. It seemed to be the very opposite of what I experienced back when I Ascended. And then... everything went black for a moment I guess. I started to feel sick and stumble, it worsened each time more and got to a point where my body needed to release it all.'
Dean felt disturbed, even frightened, about it. Now that he took a grasp on that piece of memory, more and more began to appear on his mind.
The breathing of the boy was getting unsteady as despair filled his mind. His eyes were filled with wrath, but not directed just for the Dreads, but also for himself.
He remembered now that all the "Chaos" that was gathering around him began to enter his body. At the time, Dean was semi-conscious, even though he seemed fully conscious while agonizing because of that strong energy. Nevertheless, he could recollect his screams of pain, the rapid rate that his heart was beating, and the sensation of 10 tons being thrown from a building directly on his back; all the feelings that he had while experiencing that traumatic sensation were still clear on his mind, but he wasn't aware of his surroundings when it happened.
His head was getting heavier as he thought about all the things that happened before. He wasn't feeling well at all. His sob stopped for a while, but began again, with more intensity.
Dean couldn't believe in many things since he left Refuge Sarah, even though he was just at the start of his fantastic journey. However, the thing that most shocked him than all others was the fact that he was the main culprit for the invasion of Refuge Sarah.
He didn't know why his body absorbed that energy, nor why it was released with such intensity. However, one thing was true on his mind: if Refuge Sarah was now destroyed and all the survivors, dead, then part of the reason for this befell on his shoulders.
