Chapter 4 - Freedom of Speech

After elegantly putting on her glasses, Catherine tied up her shoulder-length hair and combed it into a ponytail. Then, she haphazardly rolled down her sleeves, looking like she was a recent college graduate.

"Hello, I have an interview with the editor-in-chief of Wellings magazine today."

Catherine walked to the front desk elegantly and said very politely, "Can you let me in? I'm going to be late in five minutes."

"I'm sorry, Miss Crawford. The editor-in-chief is still occupied. Please wait a little longer."

Catherine had no choice but to give up. As a member of the Kate family in the past, no one had ever dared to make her wait. No one in the organization dared to say such things to her.

Although it was just a cover, Catherine felt she had to play the part properly so as not to arouse suspicion.

Corning Heights was the oldest company in the industry, and Wellings Magazine had written a report about it, which was why Catherine valued an official position here.

Not only that, organizing future events would inevitably stir up public opinion, so control over the organization's marketing was another reason for Catherine to go undercover.

Not long after, the front desk staff apologized again to Catherine, "Sorry to have kept you waiting. The Editor-in-chief has called for you. Please follow me."

"Okay." After the customer service staff at the front desk helped her swipe the access card, Catherine followed slowly behind her.

The customer service staff took her through the security gantry and boarded the elevator with her. She swiped the access card again in the elevator and pressed the button for the fourth floor.

Catherine became very interested in this organization. There was no magazine company in the upper city district that had such a complicated entry procedure.

They had to be hiding a lot of secrets. Catherine laughed to herself. She had made the correct choice.

Meanwhile, Johnson, the editor-in-chief of Wellings magazine, was frantically massaging his temples.

Although there were a few promising candidates among the young people he interviewed, most of the job seekers had never been in the media industry before, there were also a few who were inexperienced newcomers to any industry – college students who had just started working not long ago. This gave Johnson a headache.

"Chief editor Johnson, the next interviewee, Miss Crawford, has arrived."

"Oh, bring her in." He hoped that this interviewee could give him something different.

"Hello, Chief Editor Johnson, my name is Catherine. This is my application letter and resume."

As soon as he entered the door, Johnson was taken aback by Catherine's unique temperament. She was not only different, it seemed like she was a different species altogether!

"Chief editor?" Catherine called out to the dazed Johnson, and he immediately lowered his head awkwardly to look at the resume provided by Catherine.

"Oh, I'm sorry, please have a seat, please have a seat. Miss Catherine Crawford, is it? I saw in your resume that you previously worked as a translator, why work for a magazine company now?"

"I'd actually studied mass communications in college. It was only because of some... Personal reasons that I changed my career to become a translator." Catherine pretended to be a workplace worker who had been alienated by society. Her "helpless" demeanor instantly won Johnson's sympathy.

"Then may I ask you, Miss Catherine, would you want to be a front-line reporter for us?"

He really offered her the bottom of the barrel. Catherine mocked herself in her heart.

"I don't mind. Being a reporter can teach me a thing or two about how to act in front of a camera, and about how to talk to different kinds of people too."

"It's great that you're so comfortable. Actually, this position has been vacant for a long time. Although many interviewees have come, most of them have different work philosophies from what we believe in. In that case, welcome to the Welling family. Of course, we have a special way to celebrate new Wellings employees."

"Oh, what's that?" Catherine asked with interest.

"Freedom of speech," Johnson said with a sincere but serious smile.

Just then, Johnson's office phone began to ring.

"Hello, this is Johnson. Yes, I am." Johnson hurriedly answered the phone, then silently mouthed to Catherine, "You can leave now." Catherine didn't say anything out of politeness. Instead, she thanked Johnson and walked out.
