Kat's POV
I woke up the next morning freaking out looking to make sure I am in the same spot. I finally breath a sigh of relief when I realize that I did. Good thing too because that means I at least know where I am. I started to pick up my bag, and my water bottle so I could be on my way. The sun was just rising over the horizon into the sky. I love to wake up and see the sun rise. Seeing the colors that are just so perfect. It almost makes me forget about all the tragedy that is going on. I start walking to this gas station that I heard about a long time ago. I am hoping there is water, and food there. Taking the last bite of cracker and last sip of water. I am about to get to the border when I see a car pull up to the gas station. I immediately hide behind some nearby rocks hoping they do not see me. The last thing I want is to be caught by agents when I barely got away from the last one. Then I saw four guys get out of the car, but they certainly did not look like agents. I was very puzzled and was not sure what to think. I sat there watching behind the rocks to see what they were doing. A few minutes past by, and I looked down to see a shadow on my skin. I completely froze holding my gun as tight as I could without pulling the trigger. I turned around, and just as I was about to scream, he said "wait." I do not know why I stopped myself, but the look in his eyes somehow told me I could trust him. "Hey, it's ok, do you need a ride?" His voice was soothing and calming that it made my heart stop. I can trust him, right? I shook my head and looked up at him slowly. He winked and said "alright come on. It's a long way to get back home from here." He held out his hand to help me up. I looked at him for a second then hid behind him as we walked back to the car. As we are walking back to the car, we are having a conversation. "What is your name?" He asked a smile in his voice. "Yours first." I could not just give my name first. I may be pushy but I need to be a little cautious. Except I think I'm falling for a guy I just met. What is wrong with me? "I am Derik. Derik Johnson." I looked up at him and was very unsure about giving my name until he smiled a little bit sweeter. "Kathrine. Kathrine Cardinal, but everyone calls me Kat for short." I said noticing he was looking at the gun in my hand. I giggled a little embarrassed that I still had it in my hand. I slowly re-holstered my gun putting him a little more at ease. I did not realize that I was still holding it. "So, Kat why are you here all alone?" "The reason I am alone is because last year agents busted into my house. They got my parents and killed them. My sister Maddie left a month before I did, and when I went back to bring food, I had found out what happened. I still do not know where Maddie is. I have been staying in Storm district since, and almost out of supplies, but at least I haven't been caught yet." Why did I tell him all of that? Am I crazy or am I stupid? I do not know what it is, but it's like he has this trance on me. He looked like he was having a conversation in his head then started to look at me and smile. "Well Kat, I can't leave you out here you can stay with me if you like. We will go to Storm district to get the rest of your things in the morning. It is dangerous out here at night, and at least this way I will know you are okay." All I could say was "okay." He looked me up & down I assumed looking to see if I was hurt anywhere due to the dry blood on me from the agent I shot yesterday. I looked up and said "You don't have to do that you know. I am still kicking and breathing, I have been on my own for a while & can take care of myself." I laughed "now I sound like an old lady." He laughed "Well still I would be a lot happier knowing you are safe." He opened the door to the car so I can slide into the back seat, and he slides in next to me. A man gets in the driver seat and turns to look at me. "Who is this Derik?" Derik shoots him a look as if not to ask. I try not to laugh at his expression and failed miserably because he was looking at me like I was crazy. "Okay, okay. I get it don't ask." As the man in the driver seat is about to start the car two more men get into the car. Then we were off to what Derik calls home.
