Chereads / Dagon’s Return / Chapter 11 - The goblin chief

Chapter 11 - The goblin chief

A large goblin walked out of the tent, stopping to asses the situation as it emerged.

The goblin was slightly taller than Dagon, but looked to weigh more than him and Raj combined. Two tusks protruded from his face. A sword too large for Raj or Dagon to even carry was strapped to its back. It was a real monster, the first Dagon had ever seen.

"A goblin chief," Dagon thought aloud. Raj nodded his head as he got back into stance.

This was a whole different fight now, they had to be careful, or this monster could easily kill them all,

The goblin chief stared viciously at Dagon after seeing the dead goblins all over the ground. It wanted revenge. It drew it's sword as it stepped towards them.

Dagon quickly pulled out his bow. This wasn't going to be an easy fight, if he could put it down before it got to them, it'd save them from a very tough battle.

He pulled the drawstring back as he notched his arrow.

The goblins earlier weren't worth imbuing his arrows with magic, but the goblin chief was different.

The arrow was set on fire by Dagon's magic, ready to fire at any moment.

50 yards was too far for an opponent already aware of him. It'd have plenty of time to dodge or block the shot, so Dagon waited.

The goblin chief slowly walked towards them, wary of the flaming arrow.

When it arrived within 30 feet of Dagon, he fired his bow.

Woooosh—!

The arrow burned through the air as it soared toward the goblin chiefs head, but it was ready for it.

Dagon notched another arrow as the first one flew. He didn't light this one on fire, but still imbued it with magic. Hopefully, this wouldn't catch the goblins attention as he dealt with the first shot.

The chief moved his sword in front of him, holding it with two hands as he blocked the arrow.

As the goblin moved the sword from his face, he had a wide grin on his face, seemingly taunting the group in front of him.

It was too late before he noticed the second arrow heading straight for his right leg.

—Swooosh—!

The arrow drilled right through his right knee, instantly causing the goblin chief to falter. He dropped to his left knee as he howled in pain.

Dagon couldn't let this chance slide. He sprinted straight for the monster, his sword ablaze.

The goblin chief looked up, it was even angrier now. It wanted to kill this trespasser no matter what.

The goblin chief stood up, placing his weight all on his left leg, as his right was now useless.

Dagon couldn't win in a head on fight against the chief, he knew that, but he had a chance now that he was injured.

When he reached with 5 feet of the goblin chief, he changed directions, heading towards the goblins right side.

It bared his fangs as it tried to hobble around. The chief swung his sword down with his right hand, intending to chop Dagon down before he could do anything.

Dagon stepped back, waiting for his plan work.

The goblin chief had more intelligence than the common goblin, but compared to humans it's intellect was still low.

As the goblin swung, his weight unconsciously shifted to his right leg. He lost balance from that one swing, falling straight for the floor.

Dagon knew the goblin chief couldn't resist that swing. It was too angry to think clearly.

As the goblin chief landed on the ground, Dagon pounced. Moving to his left side now, he was in no danger from the sword.

Before the goblin chief could push himself up, Dagon had arrived by his side.

—Woosh!

The flaming sword sliced through the air, heading straight for the goblins neck.

—Sliicee!

The sword barely met any resistance as it cut straight through. The flames melted the tough skin, as the magic in the sword provided the extra power he needed.

The goblin chief was dead.

Raj and Lily gave each other a look of relief, as the body stopped moving. They didn't know what to do in this situation, and were terrified of the monster ahead of them.

Luckily, Dagon acted quickly. The monster was killed before they had a chance to act.

Dagon sat down, a look of exhaustion on his face. He'd ignored the fear in his heart as he faced the goblin chief, but it was still there. He'd gotten lucky with the arrow through the leg. He didn't want to think about what would've happened if he faced the beast head on.

After a few minutes of rest, the group got up to loot the area. All of the weapons were placed in a pile by the goblin chiefs dead body. The chief was the biggest loot of the day. Surely they'd get an extra reward for killing him, they hoped.

Dagon approached the tent, as Raj and Lily continued to search the area for any missing treasure.

He swung up the curtain as he peeked inside. It was larger than he expected. A throne sat in the back, with a fire in the middle.

Weapons, armor, and different kinds of jewelry covered the floor. It seemed this group of goblins had done its fair share of killing in the past, which was most likely the reason for his job in the first place.

Dagon placed it all in his storage ring without a second look. It was better to grab it for now, and look through it later.

When Dagon exited the tent, Raj and Lily were waiting for him by the corpse of the chief. He quickly stashed the corpse and pile of weapons, before leading the group out of the cave.

The party didn't talk much on the way out. They all had different things on their mind after today's hunt, it wasn't the usual wolf hunting.

As they reached the bottom of the mountain the carriage was waiting for them. They hopped on quietly and headed back for the city. No one rested this time.

It was halfway there before Raj spoke up, "Thank you, Dagon. I'm glad we asked you to join us. I didn't know what to do back there, and you killed it before I could even move."

Lily nodded her head as Raj spoke.

"Don't worry about it guys, you weren't the only one that was scared. I just wasn't ready to die, I had to do what I could to get rid of that thing," Dagon replied staring out the back of the carriage.

Raj nodded his head, but said no more. The group sat there quietly the rest of the trip.

It was night by the time the group reached Harkon. They planned to meet back at the guild in the morning, before heading their separate ways.

Dagon walked around the city for awhile before heading back to the guild. That was something from his past life, he always took walks to clear his head.

The fight today was more than he expected out of a goblin hunt. It reminded him of the work he needed to do, and how much more he needed to learn.

When Dagon got back to his room, he washed himself up before heading to bed. As he laid there he questioned his growth. As usual, he checked his stats for the motivation he needed to keep up his grueling training.

[Dagon]

[Health: 13/13]

[Stamina: 13] [Strength:11]

[Magic: 15] [Agility: 7]

[One-handed sword proficiency: 25%]

[Longbow proficiency: 53%]

His base stats had been rising steadily with his new training. He could feel it. The sword training had doubled his sword proficiency, it was rising at a rapid pace. He needed to become good enough to take down a monster like the goblin chief head on without a worry, if he wanted to feel safe.

His bow proficiency had almost halted. Maybe training was necessary to keep raising it, but it wasn't important at the moment. He knew it'd keep rising with experience in the field, and that was good enough for now.

For now, he needed to focus on magic. His flaming sword was a nice bonus, but it didn't do much for his combat ability. He needed to learn some spells before his next job. Dagon planned to visit Leroy tomorrow to borrow some new books.

After planning out his improvement, Dagon went to sleep. He was exhausted after today's hunt.

The party met in the morning in the main hall. After some food, they headed to the front desk to receive their reward. Dagon only needed to show the tusk of the Goblin chief he'd cut off to prove their victory.

"You guys actually faced a goblin chief? And lived?" Mary was stunned. A goblin chief was a C rank monster. To be killed by 2 D ranks and an E rank was surprising.

"We have Dagon to thank for that," Raj confessed.

"I see, why don't you visit me later, Dagon. We can check your stats, maybe it's time for a rank up."

"Yes, ma'am," Dagon replied before heading for Jack's shop.
