Lumin walked down the stone path through the heavily wooded area leading to the dorm area of campus. Every student was required to dorm because on the island it has the campus, a shopping and food court area, a doctor/hospital, and houses/apartments for the teachers and custodians.
It was like a small city located on an island in the Bermuda Triangle and everything was for the students at this school. There was a underwater train to get back to the mainland but the school made sure everything the students needed was on the island at their disposal.
They were all children of elite supernatural families that are in the school to prep for when they are introduced to high society. Ultimately, you can't get in without knowing someone who knows someone. Lumin's guardian knew someone who knows someone, that's how he got in even though he has practically no money. Well… he has a way to fix that. A quick fix.
He knows he technically should be grateful but he can't help but despise old money and therefore he hates that he has to be so close to the living breathing products of it. All of the skeletons in their closet should be keeping them up at night but instead their plush feather pillows allow them to have the best most peaceful dreams. He instead stays up to get money any way he could. Ultimately, he was insanely jealous of their lives.
He walked up to a large building that looked like a hotel. It had around thirteen floors and a sign on the tall black gate in front of it which read "Sophomore Dorms". This was the place he would be sleeping for this year.
He saw the front desk in the building as a women at the desk stood and smiled towards him. She was wearing a uniform with what looked like a train conductor hat, it was actually kind of funny.
She was a shade darker than him and had a southern accent. She seemed happy to see another black person here. "Welcome to the Sophomore Dorms, Lumin Monroe I presume?" She didn't stop smiling as she said his name and it unsettled him even though he knew that she was just doing his job. He wasn't use to people smiling for almost nothing.
He nodded his head and gave the women a very unthreatening feeling. "Yes Ma'am." He tried to return an as equally polite smile.
"Oh, we'll aren't you the cutest thing." She looked at him like she wanted to squeeze his cheeks. Her hands raised until she realized what she was doing and cleared her throat as if to knock sense into herself. "Your room is on the eighth floor and…" She used her pointer finger to scroll down the computer page. "It says your roommate is already there. She's a sweet girl so you two should get along just fine."
"Thank you Ma'am. Fingers crossed since I'm nervous" Crossing your fingers was a way of saying 'May the odds be in my or your favor' between the supernaturals.
"I'm sure you'll be fine baby." She smiled brightly at him and he returned the gesture with ease. Lumin was a master at controlling his facial expressions. If he wanted to, he could be a world class actor. "Fingers crossed."
Lumin walked up the stairs. His boots making tapping sounds against the tiles. His pouch was hanging from his waist. It was the kind that looked like it should be holding coins, it was a bit odd that it didn't make any sounds as he moved.
He opened the regular looking white door. He saw the same girl that Maxwell ran to earlier that day. The first thing he noticed was that her bangs covered her eyes. It made him uncomfortable that he couldn't see where her eyes were since he read people that way.
She stuttered out a shy, "H-Hi, Lumin, right?" She pushed her hanging hair behind her ears but kept those annoying bangs in front of her eyes. "I sure hope so, I don't want some random stranger in our room."
Lumin's lips quirked up at the joke trying to ease her tension."And if I wasn't?"
Even if Lumin couldn't see her eyes, the temperature in the room seemed to drop as she spoke. "As part of the student council, I am allowed to take precautionary measures against students that don't comply after the first time being told." It was as if she turned into a military drone. Yet another thing about this girl that made him uncomfortable.
"Hmm…" Lumin lost his smile before quickly putting it back on. He showed his extra tooth this time that was in front of the top front row of teeth. It looked like a fang. "Well it's a great thing I'm Lumin then. Nice to meet you…"
"Celeste.. I know, I know" she rolled her eyes as if she heard was she was about to say a million times. "A werewolf named Celeste, the humans would think Im some YA character or something."
Lumin breathed air through his nose and walked into the room without closing the door, looking around the space. "It's funny you say that. That's exactly what I thought the first time I saw you."
Celeste raised an eyebrow in confusion. "When did you see me?"
"Maxwell practically flew over to you as soon as our conversation ended earlier."
"We're just friends."
"I never said you weren't."
Lumin was going to ask a question before the door rushed open. There stood Maxwell who was holding the door open and Hao YunXiang. Lumin looked at Celeste for her reaction before looking back at Maxwell. It was clear that she was use to them coming in and it unsettled Lumin that they could come in without being threatened like he did, so he stayed quiet thinking about what to say.
