Amber had somehow survived school, though she came back home with twice the painful headache when she had left.
She didn't want to think about what happened this morning, so she chose to blame it on her recent lack of sleep.
She threw her bag on the couch when she entered and went straight to her mother's medicine cabinet where she took two sleeping pills from the little bottle.
Swallowing the pills with a glass of water from the kitchen, she then returned to the living and turned on the television. She exhaled a breath when the voices of a walking dead movie filled the room.
She had chosen the first one she saw and wasn't going to watch it either way. It just calmed her, giving her something to focus on rather than plain silence; her being home alone.
Amber walked over to the drawer of snacks, talking out a mint and throwing it to her mouth before going up her stairs.
