Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 ~ Ryder Law

"Sam, come back!"

"Please don't touch me." She brushes his hand off her shoulder as she storms towards the door. Just when she's about to open it, Mr. Knight comes up behind her and slams it shut, trapping her between her arms.

She tries not to look at him, her mind going furious at the thought of him defending that criminal who has ruined the mind of every single person in the city.

"Sam, it's not like that. I told you you aren't ready to hear this."

"Hear what? That you're on HIS side? Do you know what he did? They told us in school that this man KILLED people! He took lives, and he ruined lives. He broke the law! And you KNOW it! How can you defend him??"

"I told you that he didn't want me to defend him! He wanted me to listen to his story."

"Oh, then what? After exchanging stories, you guys exchanged phone numbers and Snapchat too!?"

He looks down at her with a stern face, waiting for her to calm down. Sam takes a deep breath and grips tightly onto her bag.

"I don't want to listen to that story. It's ridiculous. I'm not interested in that dude's life. I don't want to hear it."

"Well, you asked for it."

"That was before I knew you sided with him."

"You wanted me to explain the situation to you to prove that I do not side with those people, right? So may I please do so?" Silence fills the room while Sam debates on whether she should or should not listen to what her uncle has to say. She looks to her sides, his arms still trapping her between himself and the door.

"You can let me go. I won't leave. I'm going to listen to what you have to say."

"Alright. Thank you." He responses and pulls back so she can step away from the door. They both walk back to the couch and sit down. Only this time, she keeps her distance from her uncle to feel safer.

"Sam, you don't have to be scared of me. I can assure you that I am not one of those people."

"Just start explaining, please?"

"Of course..."

2018

The courtroom is full of people. The press keeps trying to storm the building to get the tiniest picture of him. It is loud and intense. While everybody is yelling around, screaming what kind of verdict the jury should choose, the judge keeps trying to silence the people.

When everybody is finally quiet, the prosecutor continues the cross-examination.

"Mr. Law, after the police had captured you, you told them that you-"

"Yo dawg, look at this. That one is nasty."

Everybody faces the accused who just interrupted the man.

"That is probably the biggest booger I've ever seen. Yo, do you guys know those people who eat boogers?" He says while smearing it under the table.

"When I was a kid, I tried it once, and I don't understand the hype be-"

"Silence!" The judge yelled.

"So... as I said," the prosecutor continues, "you admitted to the police following crimes-"

"Please, oh my god. Can we please skip this? I am guilty. I even admitted that I am guilty."

"Sir, my client is mentally ill and in need of medical help." The trial lawyer says.

"Mr. Law's mental state is excellent."

"For debate." Ryder whispers.

"Your honor, Mr. Law's mental state is by far no excuse for his actions. He admitted to the police about having no regrets about his actions. He described some of the crimes he committed in detail and explained his joy in them. He is a psychotic and manipulative genius who only-"

"Objection!"

Ryder looked at his lawyer in confusion.

"Why objection? He called me a genius."

The judge looked down at him angrily while hitting the hammer down on the pedestal.

( N/A: I don't know what you call that little thing they collide with the hammer)

"Mr. Law, for the last time-"

"God, can you please not call me Law? That sounds so stupid." The police have no information about him. No personal details. No full name, no address, nothing. Calling him Law was all they had, even though the name did not correspond with his actions at all.

Suddenly, the press storms into the courtroom. People started screaming in terror as the camera lights began to flush all across the room. Everybody is yelling, pushing each other around, they started going crazy.

"SILENCE!! SILENCE!!!" The judge yells, but nobody listens.

The only thing Ryder cares for is not to let them get a picture of his face. He covers it as soon as they run through the door, making sure that not one single camera would catch him.

The judge motions the criers to bring Ryder out of the room, letting him cover his face in the process.

They walk to the back door and to the police car, where the press has been waiting eagerly. They yell questions from all sides.

"LAW, HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU BECAME A CRIMINAL?!"

"WILL THE MURDERER BE LOCKED AWAY??"

"FOR HOW LONG IS HE GOING TO STAY IN JAIL?!"

"IS IT TRUE THAT YOU WILL ALLOW A CRIMINAL TO BE FREE JUST BECAUSE HE CLAIMS TO BE CRIMINALLY INSANE??"

The police put him into the car, where he remains with his hands on his face. As they start driving, he puts them down, sighing.

"Criminally insane? I never claimed to be criminally insane."

"Careful, Law. Anything you say can and will be used against you, remember?" The officer reminds him.

"So what? Do you think your law is going to protect you? Watch me become a free man within three days." He scoffs and leans back, running his hand through his messy hair.

"Criminally insane... tsk. Is it this easy to excuse your crimes nowadays? F*cking stupid." He whispers talks to himself.

Finally arriving at the police station, they get out of the car and walk into the building. No press this time. Only police officers who have been waiting eagerly to capture him finally.
