As soon as her blue and blonde twin pony tails disappeared down the ladder and the trap door closed, he soon felt his depression return as tears began streaming down his dirty cheeks.
He went over to and furrowed inside of a large moulding box in the far corner of the dark attic hidden behind piles of stuff and other boxes. He dug around until he found what he was looking for.
Having found it, he burrowed himself in the dusty old sofa and covered himself with the musty duvet and closed his eyes with the old oddly shaped rock he had found a while ago firmly in his grasp.
He had for some reason formed an odd attachment to this old rock, it was the only thing he felt he really owned even though it technically wasn't his. He kept it hidden so Ruben and Victor wouldn't find it otherwise they would just throw it away or something.
He remained in that position sniffling and quietly crying himself to sleep. Meeting Kayla who he assumed was his mum made him realise nothing would ever be the same ever again.
_______________
A few hours later, Viera entered the attic carrying the usual bread, soup and water as well as a bucket of soapy water and a towel to wash him with.
She expected him to run up to her like he usually would but was disheartened to find him in bed snivelling in his sleep. Sympathy, empathy and sadness raged through her maiden heart, she put everything down and wrapped herself around him.
She remained like so for a while and was once again reminded of her little brother when looking at his pale face, she bent her head and kissed his forehead.
Viera then thought of the emotional suffering he must be going through knowing he was a metaphorical nobody.
Once again she bent her head ,this time to his ear and whispered" I feel bad always calling you 'child' I know you might hate me for this but your four years old now, I feel like this is the best option." She paused to think through what she was about to do before continuing " you remind me so much of my little brother, so how about we name you King? Maybe not the best idea to name you after a dead person who's not really significant in the grand scheme of things but he is to me and its a beautiful name. You never know, in the future it might come to suit you nicely..."
She tailed off because following her words, the child before her began to glow brightly and she was forced to squint so as not to go blind . She had been present at the naming of her Young masters so she knew the glow he was emitting wasn't quite as bright as theirs but it was bright nonetheless. The usually pitch black room was illuminated entirely in an electric purple colour for a while before dying down.
It was too dark for her to see any particular changes in the newly named child but she had no time to light a candle to observe, she had to return to her duties.
She carefully detached herself before slowly exiting the room.

Kurtis was more tired than he initially thought, so much so that he did not wake up until the following day were he found his breakfast already on the small table and was soon greeted by Kayla.
There was not much light in the room so she didn't notice any differences in his appearance, it was only because Kurtis was used to the darkness that he had been able to discern what she looked like. Kurtis himself didn't feel very different so his appearance change went unnoticed by everyone apart from Viera who chose to stay silent about it.
______________
Two years and a half passed. Over that time he had grown a lot closer to Kayla, she became another metaphorical light in the dark for him in the battle to fend off his depression. Of course he still had to suffer under the continued bullying of Ruben and Victor which both Kayla and Viera could do nothing to stop but with the both of them supporting him it became bearable.
The more time she spent with Kurtis the more Kayla's eyes adjusted to the darkness and she soon realised some of his hair was a dark and dirty purple and so were his eyes. She was intrigued because she knew that could only happen if he was named but soon forgot it.
Kurtis himself didn't know so she figured he hadn't been told, besides, she could guess who named him since he began insisting she call him king. She had protested saying that he wasn't a king and neither was she his subject but agreed to call him 'Kay' once he insisted it wasn't in that way and that it was just a nick name his carer maid gave him.
Kayla taught him as much as she could about the world. About the marvels of magic and abilities as well as what she new of all the countries and continents.
Apparently this new world was a lot larger than Earth, from what she had described, there were six main powers ruling most of the land known as Empires and under them were many kingdoms like the Carnelian Kingdom.
There was a seventh smaller power as well but she didn't know much about them. There were a few independent countries and a few religions although it appears the majority of the world population were atheist.
There are four main magic elements: Fire, Wind, Earth and Nature (plants, vines, trees etc) along with a few rarer and more obscure ones.
Abilities could range from useful ones like flight to seemingly pointless ones like being able to attract specifically cats or dogs. How strong said ability was depended on how much mana an individual has, someone could be born with the ability to turn invisible but because they had low mana they wouldn't be able to stay invisible for more then a minute. Whereas someone might have the seemingly useless ability to extend their nails but because they have so much mana, they could extend them up to four hundred metres.
There is also a magic government, a ranking based on power and also several academies but Kayla didn't know much about all of that, however she did mention that Victor and Ruben would be enrolling at the 'Celestial' Academy wherever that was. Not that he really cared.
This was a basic summary of most of what she had taught him amongst a few other things.
That year and a half in comparison to the previous years had been a bit better but like they say.
All Good things eventually come to an end.
