Chapter 8 - THE RISE OF AN UNWANTED OPPOSITION

The community's animosity against this couple has steadily increased because Ulang's family was not pleased with their son's decision to marry from a community where they don't even share water as a result of developed hatred. His wife is treated as if she were an animal. As a result, Luong's parents have chosen to relocate to the country's eastern region, where they believe they will live in peace without the pressures of their societies. Mr Ulang called his wife in their small hut, where they stayed, in the evening and informed her of his decision to leave the area and relocate to the Eastern part of the country, where they could live in peace. His wife was initially opposed to the decision.

Achila: But honey, how can we leave while the child is still so young. He is not even three months old now.

Ulang: Look here, honey, I am doing this for Luong's future. I don't want him to grow up knowing that our parents are not happy with our marriage.

Achila: Why can't we wait until he is six months old?

Ulang: Sweetheart, you don't understand who my uncle is; that man is evil, and I am afraid he can harm my son or me, and I can't allow that; Luong and you are all that I have now and forever.

Achila heeded her husband's advice, and the two of them set out the following day for the Eastern part of the country. The road connecting the two communities leads to Utaba in the country's east. They were still 4 hours away from Wun-Rook, where they planned to board a bus to Utaba; after walking for nearly 3 hours, they were summoned by strangers wielding deadly weapons. Achila had a feeling things weren't going to plan. She ordered her husband to hurry back home, but Mr Ulang insisted on staying with them. Achila learned that these people were from his community, so she spoke to them in their native tongue as Ulang stood behind her. However, one man kept asking who the man was, and she ignored him. When these strangers discovered that Ulang was a member of their rival community, they planned to murder him, but Achila intervened. They appeared to have listened to her and were on their way at first. They walked about 100 meters until a man came back running and shot Ulang. He died on the spot. Achila's relationship with young Luong was befuddling. She had no choice but to return to her husband's house, but she never considered doing so because she knew she would be suspected of killing Ulang and that people would end up killing her. Achila continued her journey with baby Luong to Win-Ruak, where she boarded a bus to Utaba, where she lived as a maid for a chief.
