Engaging in a duel in the middle of the battlefield is not as simple as let's have a duel and then they have a go.
Their soldiers had to make sure that they were staying close and provided a route to return to their sides. If they didn't do that, there was a chance that they and their leader would be trapped amongst the enemy's line.
When that happen, their end result would only be death.
There was no way that they would possibly allow it to happen, but it was also the truth that this occasionally happened. It was also why the commanders had to remember that they had to return.
They couldn't engage in a battle forever.
