"How could you say something like that? It couldn't be there fault if anything happened to me," she said.
"I'm being honest with you Liling. Even our doctor said that it's the best thing for us to do," he said. "Nothing is going to happen to me. I'm going to safely deliver our babies and they are going to be healthy," she said, her voice firm.
He looked away and closed his eyes in deep thought. Perhaps Li Fei would help in convincing her. He took a mental note of visiting her tomorrow and discuss it with her.
The next day when Li Fei was at work, she was surprised to see Jing Yue.
"To what do I owe this rare visit?" she asked as she handed a glass of cocktail juice to him.
Placing it on the table, he seriously looked at her and said," I came here in need of your help Li Fei." "Tell me about it," she said taking a seat.
"I guess Liling told you about the state of her pregnancy," he started. "State of her pregnancy? I don't get you." "Didn't she inform you that her pregnancy is high risk?" he asked. "Oh, she informed me about it but she said that it wasn't serious," she replied. "It is a lie Li Fei. Our doctor told me that it is a very risky condition and most mothers who go through it don't survive," he told her and a frown settled on her face. "Is it that serious?" she asked. "Yes it is. That's why I need you to convince her to accept my alternative. They can get the babies out of her the moment she makes six months and they grow in the incubator," he explained. "I don't think she will agree." "I told her about it and of course she refuse so that's why I decided to come to you. Her condition is worsening everyday."
She thought about it and said," I will talk to her. I will leave work early and go see her."
"Thank you very much. I will be waiting to hear what she says."
In the late afternoon, Li Fei left her workplace and headed towards Liling's house.
Reaching inside, she was directed to her bedroom and found her half sleeping.
She walked to the bed and touched her shoulder, to wake her up. "FeiFei," she said when she opened her eyes. "How are you feeling?" she asked as Liling sat up and leaned against the headrest, slightly wincing. "Some little pain," she answered before saying," Help me pass me my pills on the table."
Giving them to her and some water, she asked," Are they safe in your condition?" "Yes. The doctor said that they have no effect," she replied and handed them back to her.
Going to sit on the couch, she said," You don't look fine Liling. I can't believe that in only two weeks since I last saw you, you look this thin."
"Yeah I know. My pregnancy has complications as I told you. But everything will end," she replied. "Are you sure about it? Honestly, I doubt it. We can use other alternatives." "What do you mean?" "Like, we can get the babies out of you when you reach a certain period of time," she said. "Oh. Jing Yue sent you, didn't he?" she asked.
"It's not about that. You're clearly not doing well." "I don't see why you guys are making a fuss out of this when I'm not the first one to give birth to triplets. Women give birth to quadruplets and even more," she said. "I know Liling but we are so worried. We don't want anything to happen to you."
"I don't want to put my babies through that pain too. I believe that everything will be okay," she said and coughed at the end of her sentence and Li Fei frowned.
"Where's your nurse?" she asked. "I sent her away she's downstairs. I hate the feeling of being watched," she answered and Li Fei noticed that it was difficult for her to breath properly.
"Jing Yue is so worried Liling," she said.
"I know," she said before adding," But everything will be fine." "If you say so. But please think about it," she said. "There's nothing to think about. I would never do that," she said and Li Fei released a frustrated sigh.
When she reached the car, she called Jing Yue. "Any news?" he asked the moment he picked up. "Not at all. She refused." She heard him curse and said," I guess we should let her be." "But she's not well. Really," she said. "I know but nothing can be done."
"Perhaps... we can lie to her," suggested Li Fei.
"How?" he asked. "We can talk to her doctor and during the next check up, he says that the babies cannot be in her body anymore. That their lives are at risk. That way, she will accept it," she said. He didn't speak for a moment and a while later, he said," That would work but she would never forgive us if she finds out, especially me. What if the worst happens and God forbid, she loses one of the babies during the process? She would hate us forever." "You're right. I hadn't thought of that." "Let's give her some more time. If it comes to the worst, we shall go on with your plan," he said before hanging up.
