"We talked two days ago and he seemed as though he knew that he was leaving," she said in between her sobs.
Coaxing her, he said," I'm so sorry. But don't worry, I'm here for you. I'm not going to leave your side." A while later when she calmed down, he pulled away and looked at her bloodshot eyes. "What happened to him?" he asked wanting to know what triggered his death.
"They told us that his blood pressure was too low when we brought him and they tried but couldn't save him," she said and he noticed that she was crying again. Embracing her again, he was going to speak when they heard a voice from outside," Li Fei, are you alright?"
She pulled away and looked at him to say," I have to go. They are waiting for me."
"I'm going to be at the house. Tell me if you need anything," he said as his hands passed through her hair in an attempt to make it proper. He wanted to ask her to distance herself from Jianyu but he held himself back. This wasn't the time to be jealous. When she nodded to his words, they heard the door open and Jianyu peeked inside until he caught sight of them. "I- I'm sorry I thought that something had happened. Please excuse me," he said before closing the door.
Li Fei looked back at Jin Liwei and said," Thank you for being here, really." "You don't have to thank me. Just remember that you're not alone, I'm here for you," he reminded her.
He placed a lingering kiss on her forehead and said," Go now." She opened the door and turned to look at him one last time before leaving.
"I didn't mean to interrupt," said Jianyu the moment she reached where he was standing. "It's okay. I also didn't know he was here," she said.
Reaching home, they found that a lot of people had arrived. A number of board members and employees of Li enterprises were around. Friends and relatives had also gathered to moan with them. A few reporters were filming everything that happened. Li Fei excused herself and went to her room as she felt like being alone for a while.
Not long after, she received a call from Jin Liwei and she answered immediately.
"How are you?" he asked even though he knew that it was stupid of him to ask such a question. "Devastated. It honestly caught me by surprise. I thought that when he got done with the surgery, everything was okay," she said. "I'm so sorry about that. When is the cremation?" he asked. "We are going to do a funeral. Mom said that it's what he preferred. It's on the day after tomorrow," she stated.
"I wish to be there with you," he said. "I wish the same but it can't be possible," she said to which he understood and he replied," I will be there watching you though. I won't leave the car." "Thank you. It means a lot to me. Ah, when did you leave Shanghai?" "The moment I got the news. It was around noon," he replied.
He wanted to tell her a lot of things. How much he missed her, how he was nearly going insane but he held himself back because this wasn't the right time. Talking about random things so as to distract her, she stopped responding to his conversation and on hearing her even breathing, he could tell that she had been taken by sleep. He listened to her for a while before placing the phone down.
It was evening when Li Fei woke up. She remembered that she was talking to Jin Liwei and checked her phone to see that the call was still ongoing. Was he listening to her when she was sleeping? She called his name but he didn't respond and she decided to hang up.
She got out of bed and went to check on her mother. She realized that most people had left and only a few we around. Walking to her mother's bedroom, she found Li Jiang present too. "You've woken up? I came to your room but you're sleeping," said Li Jiang. She nodded and sat next to Li Mei," How are you feeling?" she asked both of them.
"Lost. I can't believe that Li Bao is no more," Li Mei answered and she understood. Even though her parents had gotten married through an arranged marriage, they had come to understand and love each other. She couldn't picture herself losing Jin Liwei. It would be so devastating to her that she wasn't sure if she could get back on her feet again.
"We are here for you Mom. Be strong for us please," Li Fei said. "Yes Mom, and I promise to take care of you both. I'm coming back home," Li Jiang let them know.
Two days later, it was finally the day and time for the funeral. A number of people had come to attend. Mrs Yan was comforting Mrs Li Mei. They were seated in a large gazebo and those who wished were giving speeches. Li Fei was surprised when she saw Liu Han coming to the funeral and she wondered if she was here to mock her. With her bodyguards, Liu Han approached Li Fei and her mother. She bowed her head slightly at Li Mei and said, "I'm so sorry about what happened." "Thank you," was all Li Mei replied. "You might be wondering why I'm here. The thing is, Li Fei and I have never been enemies. It was simply a competition and nothing personal. So, it really pains me seeing her in this condition," she said to which Li Mei nodded and Li Fei just looked at her knowing that she was just pretending.
Later, she took a seat and joined the other people. When it was their turn for the speech, both said that they couldn't say anything and Li Jiang spoke on their behalf. When her eyes looked around, she caught sight of a familiar black Audi from a distance and she knew that it was him. Knowing that he was here even though not close to her, it gave her some kind of comfort. When the time for the burial reached, Li Mei and her daughter couldn't help the tears. Jianyu who was so close to her hugged her so as to comfort her.
