Someone's arguing, and they're fucking loud about it. I grumbled in my sleep and tried to turn away from the source of the noise. The moment my shoulder pressed on the comfy bed, I hissed in agony.
The sudden shot of pain from my left shoulder woke me up from my sleeping haze. My other hand automatically moves on its own accord and reaches for my aching shoulder. But, I almost passed out this time from the other source of searing pain. The withering pain from my whole right arm gave me second thoughts about life. It's like both of my shoulders were paralyzed and aching differently.
The memories of me sparring with Atlas flooded my mind.
"For god's sake Mavis, stay still!" that familiar voice of Craig made me stop moving further. The stern look on his face made it clear to me that he is not the Alpha's son at the moment but a surgeon doctor. It's not that broken bones were his specialty. He must be knowledgeable enough because he's the one tending to me, I guess.
If I'm in the infirmary, I can't find Amalia anywhere.
"Okay, okay, I'm not moving." I held my breath, trying to make myself comfortable and not aggravate the injuries.
"How's the pain?" my eyes search for the source of the question, and I smiled at Kate. What's she doing here? Isn't she busy with the patrols?
"Nine out of five." I hissed, breathing in slow puffs to avoid unnecessary movements on my shoulders. Craig helped me get comfortable and covered me with the blanket.
"Figures. You've got a broken wrist. Thank heavens it was clean and my drunken decision of also taking a degree in Orthopaedics. You got a huge ass bruise on your left shoulder too." Craig narrated at me like one of those endearing nannies. "Stop moving that damn arm sling!" he scolded when I tried to take a feel of it.
So, he knows about broken bones too. It suits him well if it involves being a pack doctor.
"That's going to be a little nasty for you, Mavis. We might be a werewolf, but it'll take you a month to completely heal from that break, and that's because of your other shoulder. Whatever Alpha Atlas attacked you with, it worsened your condition." Kate commented on the side. I take a good look at her and back at Craig.
"Yeah, I'm aware, but why were you two arguing?" the question took them by surprise and both stares at one another. Thank the creators for small mercies, my arms were injured, but my senses were still functioning well.
I saw how Kate gave Craig that soft look when he wasn't aware. I can see myself in it. I am terrified. If I can easily see the connection between them with just that look, then how the hell was it for me? Kate has this resting bitch face, but I was able to pick up the situation.
My lame-ass self isn't that good with hiding my expressions. I would probably ace being obvious.
"Damn, if you two aren't mates," I muttered out of the blue when the two were still sharing a look. The blinding white color of the infirmary lacks in comparison to Kate's sudden reddening cheeks. I never thought I would see Kate like that. She's always the tough cookie.
"Shush right now!" Kate spat, jumping for my mouth with her hand when I was about to say talked, again. The sudden movement jarred my shoulders, and I wince. Craig was quick to grab Kate's waist, pulling her away from me.
The sudden bout of pain slowly ebbed. I looked at Craig whose still holding Kate's waist captive.
"What are you even thinking?" He said, talking to Kate. He's smirking at me while giving me that wiggling brows of him. Their position was pleasing for him.
I burst out laughing because of the situation. It wound up being a wrong decision, though. I was wracked with pain the moment I did. My laugh was comically cut.
"Oh god, this is definitely the worst." The realization hit me big time right now. How am I going to survive?! I won't be able to do a thing with my injury!
"That's what I'm saying. You've been only here for a day, and that shit injury of yours won't even let you have fun." Kate gestured at my condition.
"She's right, you know. How are you gonna live?" Craig added while trying to nuzzle on Kate's neck. Looking at them is so weird but at the same time complementing.
"Let go of me, you dumbass," Kate growled at the poor male who's only snickering at her. But, if I were Craig at this moment, I would probably heed Kate's words because she can be lethal if she wanted to.
"Ouch," I smirked when Craig double-over in pain out of the blue. Kate's quite strong. She's one of the pack warriors, after all. I mean, technically, all of us adults were part of it, but Kate's on active duty. We are like reserves, contrary to Kate's who love protecting the pack twenty-four seven.
I tried my hardest not to snicker, and it hurts so bad. "What are you guys doing here anyway?" I curiously ask since they're not needed at the moment, though I don't mind.
"Just checking up on you. Amanda went ballistic yesterday, you know. She almost went Godzilla over Alpha Atlas's hide when she saw you passed out and with a dangling wrist. Logan was bawling his eyes too. Also, we informed your parents, and after a long conversation with the Alpha, they're going to continue their dream vacation. That's one thing out of your conscience because of your recklessness." Craig kindly explains and nag at me while he's nursing his probably bruising abdomen.
I thank the goddess in silence. I don't want my injury to cut off my parents' well-deserved vacation. Thank god for Alpha's thoughtfulness.
"Shoot! Logan, I got to talk to him right now. That poor kid would be blaming himself." I tried to move, but then it was not possible. Both Kate and Craig give me a 'try-if-you-can' look. I sighed in surrender.
If I can't move that a great deal, then I better ask for their help.
I was about to do just that when the door to the immaculate infirmary slammed open. It almost feels like it flew out of its hinges. Whoever's coming would surely get a nasty nagging from Amanda. Any part of the infirmary is like a sacred place to her. Damage any part of it, and you're in for a beating.
"Mavy, you're alive!" that's all I've heard as I saw Sally's flying figure in my direction. I can't even move, so I brace myself for the impending impact.
"Sally, my goddess! You're pregnant, for fucks sake, be careful!" Chris's yelling echoed all through and out the infirmary.
Too late.
All the air in me died out. Sally's weight did a number on my injury. I'm deadass gasping for air this time. This woman is nuts.
I yelped for help.
Three pairs of hands carefully removed Sally from me because the stupid woman realized what she did was wrong. It's way too late. Now, she's like a corpse atop me, too afraid to move a muscle just in case she caused more damage.
"It hurts," I hissed in agony as I tried to alleviate the pain. Craig was quick on his feet and grabbed some pain reliever on one of the cabinets hoists up the wall. The moment he injected the medicine was the same time I passed out.
~
Loud. It's loud again. Can't people have their sleep peacefully? Why is it always loud? My brows met in annoyance as the noise went louder. I'm beyond annoyed at this point. Fortunately, I don't feel any pain but numbness.
"For goddesses sake, let me sleep in peace!" my voice came out hoarse. It even lacks the conviction it needs. The noise notched a bit more. This time, someone's weeping their hearts out.
"You can't! You definitely cannot sleep in peace!" I opened my heavy eyes and saw Sally's devastated face. If anyone sees Sally, they'll quietly assume that I'm dead.
"Make her stop anyone. She's freaking pregnant." I mumbled. Thank goddess for exquisite werewolf hearing the lot heard me just fine.
"I'm so sorry, Mavis. I was so reckless. I didn't mean to." She cried, and someone hugged the poor woman. I was confused when it was not Chris who did. It's Luna. I nodded at the Luna in acknowledgment.
"Yes, you were reckless. Dang, Sally, you are pregnant. Take extra care of your body." I chastised. Sally's face scrunched even further.
"I know I can't exactly help it. My hormones got ahead of me up more than usual, but I know the baby's strong. It's different." she nuzzled her face into Luna Eva's neck then burst out in tears again. "Chris is mad at me," she added.
"Can someone please facepalm the hell out of me?" it's a no-brainer, but dang, I think Sally's going to drain the life out of me.
"Sally, I know you can feel how your baby's doing, but Chris doesn't. He's quite sensitive about your family's difficulty in conceiving. Put his mind at ease and be nice to him. You are pregnant, but you're not entitled to make your partner's life a living hell." the softness in Luna's voice could make anyone cry.
"Luna," and there goes the wailing again. Luna Eva consoles the crying idiot, and I heave a sigh of relief. Maybe I can have a good sleep after this scene. A sudden thought leaps from my mind, and I look at Sally.
"Wait, so they already know that you're pregnant?" I asked, looking at the people present in the infirmary. Kate smirked in amusement.
"Who wouldn't when she went hysterically broadcasting it yesterday. Saying 'she can't die who's going to babysit my baby if we're out on dates," Craig did his best mimicking Sally's voice. Kate snickers cutely, and Luna Eva gives Craig a chiding look. The latter didn't even let off.
"I don't sound like that!" Sally said in muffled whines, head buried on Luna's chest. This girl could get away with everything if she wanted to.
"Anyway, how are you feeling, Mavis?" Affection and worry glimmer in Luna Eva's eyes. She can't approach me farther with Sally still clinging to her.
"I'm fine, Luna. I'm just feeling bum because I can't move much in this splint. It hurts with the slightest movement, but thanks to whatever Craig gave to me, I don't feel anything." Luna smiled in relief.
The sight of her motherly affection sends me a lot of happiness. Moreso, the people with me right now makes me feel well-loved and taken care of with my parents out on vacation.
"Don't celebrate just yet. Reggie would have your hide after this." the psychotic smile Craig has made me shake my head in amusement. He's enjoying my misery, the damn idiot.
I wonder if the pack was already aware of him finding his fated mate yet. The way they're cozy at each other at the moment would make it obvious. Craig's clinging on Kate's arm.
'Yup, everyone knows,' the sudden mind link jolted me out of my thoughts. It was Kate smiling at me. I smiled back in her direction. Good for them hope they'll work fine. It's good to know that they won't end up like me. My mood soured at the thought.
The hours went by with these people deciding on where I would be staying. They're arguing about it to be more on point. Even Luna Eva's giving her two cents on where I'm supposed to stay, heatedly. Who knows Luna could also be silly like this? She's always a busy woman and her being here, checking up on my poor ass made me appreciate being in this pack. The same goes for my pack members.
Now, I'm feeling drowsy as I listen to them bicker. My eyes twinkled in contentment. I better take a rest and forget the problems for now. Tomorrow is going to be a hectic day with people fussing over my injured self.
Of course, I will be hearing from my parents later. I bet they'll nag me to death, but I don't mind.
As I'm slowly falling into a deep slumber, one stubborn thought keeps floating in my mind, my mate's absence.
