Chapter 3 - Claire's Background

Claire is the only daughter out of five children, her parents, Mr and Mrs Miller are very sentimental especially when it has to do with relating to people of different background. Claire's mum, Mara Miller is a typical example of a protective mother and a fashionista too owing to the fact she established an enormous boutique and also owned a big restaurant which she named "Mara's kitchen". she's indeed a successful woman and wants her daughter, Claire to be even more successful than she is.

James Miller, Claire's father, is a medical doctor who had just finished his PhD and now owned a hospital of his own. Growing up as an only daughter, Claire had everything at her neck and call, she barely did house chores, her parents lived in one of the biggest mansion in the city with up to eight bedrooms with the headquarters, been the last child, she had more time to spend with her parents unlike her brothers who all went to other countries to study their dream courses.

Austin who is the oldest of them all just graduated as a surgeon in Yale University and presently works in John Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where he also loves with his wife and three children. One thing was certain, Claire's parents had always wanted her to marry a very wealthy man but it was a different case when Claire introduced John as her husband to be. Her parents stared at him with so much dislike and made disgust faces at him, while John and Claire's father sat on the sofa in their enormous sitting room, her mother moved close to where Claire sat and whispered "can I have a word with you, right now" and walked straight to the kitchen while Claire followed her lead, Claire's heart began to beat twice as normal because she knew exactly why her mother called her but she was determined to fight it to the last no matter what. "And who is the young man you brought into this house" her mother started trying as much as possible to hide her anger, "he's my husband to be, look mum he proposed to me" Claire said showing her mum the ring on her finger, "listen sweetie, he's no match for you, look at how beautiful you are, you deserve someone better, a billionaire husband", she said still trying to digest her anger "no mum ,you can't decide who I get married to, I love him and that's what matters" Claire said in between tears, "you must be nuts, why have you decided to bring the image of this family down to nothing, what do you expect people to say when they see you are getting married to an ordinary pauper" ,"but mum I love him", "oh shut up,what do you know about love" her mum said cutting her off, "just know that your dad and I is not in support of this marriage and if it's a joke, you better stop it" her mum finally walked out leaving Claire alone. She stood still like a statue thinking about all her mum said as tears rolled down her eyes "this can't be happening" she said with her two hands covering her face. Mrs Miller got back to the sitting room where her husband and John without uttering a word to each other. "young man" Mr Miller called out, "yes sir" replied John while sitting upright like one lost in thought. "what do you do for a living" asked Mr Miller, "I'm a car part merchant sir" John said in fear, "oh I see, and you want to marry my daughter with such a menial job? how do you intend to take care of her?" Mr Miller asked with his face squeezed as one that is ready to devour an enemy. John sat up and said "I have better plans sir", "why don't you work out such plans before coming to marry my daughter" Mr Miller replied and left the sitting room immediately leaving John in shock, "you heard him young man, can't let my daughter stoop so low as to get married to you when there are better and wealthy men out there" Mrs Miller concluded and joined her husband upstairs. John bowed his head in shame and then Claire moved him and beckoned him to follow her out of the house.

They both went out of her parents home to a calm and quiet place in the outskirts of America referred to as "the love garden", holding each other's hands, they were speechless for some time, suddenly John stopped and was reluctant to move " what's the problem my love" asked Claire, "I'm afraid your parents don't like me and our Union is at stake here, why didn't you tell me your parents are sentimental?,I mean, look at me," he said flinging his hands in the air, "I have nothing, they would never let you marry me" Claire felt so much pity and moved quickly grabbing his hands and stared directly in his eyes, "all that you are is all i'll ever need, my love for you recognizes no barrier,no one can change my mind because I've made my decision to spend the rest of my life with you, I love you mean more than money to me", she hugged him so tight and he whispered " I love you too Mom Cherie, we'll get through this together". Claire and John had to flee to London,, though John was reluctant because she didn't want her parents thinking that he ran away with their daughter, they could do anything to find them because of the power and wealthy Mr Miller possessed. They got married in England, St Peter, few of John's friends attended and relatives who were in support of their marriage. Somehow Claire felt a little sad because she knew the most important people in her life, the ones that watched her grow and supported her from her first speech to her first step as a toddler, were no where to be found in her wedding. She wished she could just close her eyes and open it to see them right in front of her but she realized those were just wishes, however, her love for John and the thoughts of spending the rest of her life with him kept her happy and always smiling at everyone who came her way to congratulate her. After the wedding, they both thanked everyone that attended and was driven to their apartment by a hired car, getting to there, John carried his wife at arms length to the bed where they laid discussing so many things, "i'm sleepy honey" Claire said rubbing her eyes, "me too" John replied with a yawn, in no time they were both asleep in each other's arms.
