"What do you mean you forfeit?!"
"I mean that I surrender. I'm giving you the win."
"But why? We can both still fight."
"Yeah, we can, but I don't want to."
"What do you mean?"
Kari walks over to me and throws me over his good shoulder. "I mean that I'm tired and don't want to fight anymore. In other words, you win, I lose, and I got a good exercise." Kari sets me down next to my father, and my father and I blankly stare at each other unsure of what is going on.
"Due to Kari forfeiting the match, Viola is declared the winner of the first match of day two," Ray announces. "After a five-minute break, match two will start."
"Do you know what just happened, Dad?"
"No, I don't. Do you?"
"I don't either."
"Kari wasn't fighting for the sake of your capacity test," Aspen, my grandfather, clarifies. "He fought you because he wanted to see if you were going to take the position of the Winter Vessel seriously. Once he determined that you were, he forfeited the match."
