After that morning, Raymond and Nigel began coming up with a way to convince Nigel's father to allow Raymond to become the village chief. By lunch time, the two were ready to confront Nigel's father.
"Are you here to explain why you embarrassed me this morning?" Nigel's father sternly asks, not looking up at his son.
Nigel wavers for a moment, but Raymond nudges Nigel's shoulder then nods. Taking a deep breath, Nigel responds, "I do not want to be the village chief. I never wanted to take on that position ever since you told me on my 13th birthday."
Angered by this response, Nigel's father slams his fist on the table, causing Nigel to flinch. "You dare to tell me that you don't want to become the village chief? It has been tradition to pass down the title once a village chief's son turns 21, and you want to stop what our ancestors have been doing for five generations?"
