Chapter 5 - Match

But she was also confused. Who were these other people?

'I was targeted by some serial killer… maybe there wasn't really a reason behind my death,' Leah thought. Though, the incident played back in her mind again. He did have a grudge against her, that's for sure, going as far as to stab her over 50 times. No, there was a clear motive for sure.

She looked around the room a bit more. The print on the papers tacked to the walls was a bit too small for her to see, but the papers on the bed were close enough to read. She poked her nose onto one of them.

"Abilene Darles," it was labeled. From her date of birth, occulos, power, everything was described on the paper. It was more of a research paper regarding some girl, which was most likely important to an investigation like such. What business did he have with this particular case, and why did he seem like some crazed lunatic trying to find hidden evidence in a cold case?

Every other document was the same. "Mariana Rainer", "William Miranda", the other two documents placed onto the bed. She flipped the page of Mariana's, to see a full spread of a picture of hers. Most likely a drivers license photo, it was a middle-aged woman who, too, had gray occulos. Just as the previous girl was, Abilene, a gray.

'Umm… a hate crime?' Leah thought. It made sense, as majority of the victims were gray, and she had no connection to the killer she had saw. She glanced and William's file. He was also a gray.

'But other than that, that's where the similarities end. They have nothing else in common…!'

She could understand the bags under Adam's eyes as well. Some sick killer was just chasing after random grays, there was probably no pattern.

"Are you… looking at those files?" Adam mumbled, looking over his shoulder at Leah. Crap. She almost forgot he was in here.

'Pretend, pretend, pretend!' she licked the back of her paw, 'No, I am a normal cat!'

Adam stared at her for a second, the tension building. She prayed he didn't actually suspect anything extraterrestrial from this cat. He already seemed suspicious of her fur color, but rightfully so, what kind of cat was naturally such a blinding color? If cats could sweat, she'd be sweating buckets.

He sighed, releasing the tension between them. He turned his chair to look at her more clearly, before placing his hand on his face and throwing his head back.

"This stress is killing me. I'm hallucinating. Really," he agonized, slouching down into his chair. Leah placed her chin onto her two paws, ready for him to start venting about how hard life was.

"I'm doing the right thing. I'm doing the right thing… right?" He grimaced, flashing a painful toothy grin at Leah. She, too, wanted to grimace at the horrifying sight.

"I don't know… as long as I can save other people, then it's okay for this case to run a little cold. I just feel so…" he trailed off, clenching his fists, "so… guilty."

"You get me, right?" Adam perked up, pointing a finger at his chest. Leah perked up, tilting her head as if to say, "Now what the hell is wrong with you?" But, quickly, she remembered she had to act as if she were a normal house cat, and slammed her head back down onto the mattress, as if she had done nothing at all.

"Can you understand me?" Adam exclaimed, getting up from his chair. He grabbed the kitten in his palms and sat down on the bed, exposing her belly towards him as he shook her almost violently. She squirmed in response, trying to get out of the extremely exposing position. She resulted to kicking him in his stomach, but to no avail.

"I…" Adam clenched his teeth and grinned, tossing his head back once more, "I really am going insane."

"Could you be like that dog? Puppy with a Vlog? The one that speaks?!" he began to fan girl. He brought his face closer to hers, his eyes wide, "Your secret is safe with me," he whispered.

The both stared at each other, kind of dumbfounded.

"But really, you're so cute!" Adam began to squeal again, hugging her tightly. All Leah wanted to do was hiss and scratch at the weirdo, but with all this movement, her aching wounds allowed her to only stretch her paws out, pushing away at him.

'Dirty man, you wanted to throw me out no less than a few hours ago! What is wrong with you?!' She mentally hissed. Too bad all she was capable of doing in her body was flop around miserably.

Suddenly, he lifter her up and carried her over to his desk. Gently, he placed her on his lap and continued to work away at his computer. Leah froze in confusion.

'What kind of two faced tsundere is this guy?'

"So…" Adam began to talk once more, typing away at the computer, "you can be my rubber duck debugger. I gotta get a few things straight."

'He's going to tell me everything?!'

Adam saw the look Leah was giving him and gave a weak smile. "Just for the times, okay? We gotta figure out when the next incident's gotta take place."

'Damn!'

"So, I calculated between all the incidents-err, murders. Each murder happened exactly two months apart. Disregarding that some months have 30 days and others 31, it should be 62 days in total between the killings," he explained, pointing at the screen. "I've done the math multiple times over, so there's no mistake. You can look at the calendar if you want to."

To look, or not to look. Leah wanted to crawl up his lap and read the screen of dates, but doing so would be extremely suspicious. It was best to just lay in his lap like she was doing earlier.

"Hmm… so today is October 18. "

'Mhmm…' Leah nodded along.

"And if the last one occurred August 24th…" he pointed, tapping away at his computer monitor, "…that means the next one has to happen on October 25th."

Leah shot up in response. She couldn't help but react in shock. 'So soon?!'

"There's 7 days until the next incident."
