Chapter 1 - When I Wake Up

A deep, bitter chill cut the the air, and scattered streetlights illuminated a large bridge.

A lonesome figure stood on the bridge, peering off into the darkness of the Winter night. Traffic zoomed past, but it was as if she was stuck in her own space, unable to see or hear anything else.

She was dressed in a thin, white dress, which fluttered in the howling wind, and it was as if she did not notice the chill creeping up on her. Her dress fell to silky layers at her knees, exposing her arms and legs to the icy chill.

She walked up to a streetlight, standing under it for a while, staring into the darkness. Her long, black hair fluttered gently, the jet black strands a stark contrast to her pale, chalky skin. Her extraordinary pallor and blood red lips made her appear like a ghost, whose silhouette walked - floated, almost - across the walkway of the bridge.

In her hands, she held a long piece of red silk, as if stained by blood or wine, and her pale, bony hands wringed it harshly. The slight tremble in her fingertips was the only sign that she was human, and not some haunting, supernatural being.

Then, she inhaled sharply.

She let out a long, deep note, which caused the sounds of the night, of the traffic and the other people, to disappear. The other pedestrians on the walkway turned their eyes towards her, and for a breathless moment, were drawn in and hypnotised.

Then, she sang another note, on a minor key.

Then, another.

They formed a dark and sorrowful melody, the harrowing notes chilling to the bone. It was as if she was the Goddess of Death, a ghostly silhouette blending into the darkness of night, whose voice could encapture and destroy souls. The music created a scene in their minds, of a lone survivor in a misty battlefield - a ghostly figure in the night.

The chilling melody contained memories of suppression, betrayal and sorrow, and tragedy no young girl should have ever experienced.

She was like a siren, luring in the onlookers into a deathly trap, with her smooth, unbroken music and hypnotising melody.

The onlookers were completely immersed in the scene, and nobody dared to breathe.

Then, the ghostly silhouette let out a final note to complete her harrowing performance; a long, shrill and haunting note, which would be planted in their minds and follow them.

As she held her final note, she lifted the tip of her mouth into a slight smile, which was sorrowful and melancholic.

But suddenly, before she could end it, she felt a sudden impact hit the back of her head. It was a small, unidentifiable object, which flew from a nearby car as it whizzed by, and struck her suddenly.

This disrupted her note suddenly and she let out an off-tune sound, as if someone ripped a cord out.

Then, losing her balance, she toppled forwards into the darkness, leaving her performance as one which would never be completed, left to haunt those who witnessed it.

She was enveloped and consumed by the darkness of the night, her figure like a shooting star plummeting to the Earth.

Her face was whipped against by the wind and bitter tears stung her face, but as she toppled down into the boundless depths of the waters below, one thought flashed through her mind:

'When I wake up, this nightmare will be over.'
