Chapter 1 - Prologue

Ye Ping fixed his gaze on the CEO of Xijing Network Technology Co., LTD.

"Are you sure you won't change your mind?" Xi Junpo glance at him. You could tell from his chilly tone that he was being dead serious.

"Sir, my decision is final. This book held a very special someone in my heart." Ye Ping clenched his palm, feeling powerless.

'In a world of injustices, is there any place for the powerless to protest?'

"Are you certain? Do you have no concern about your family? friends? relatives?" Xi Junpo inquired once again, his brow furrowing with each second.

When Ye Ping saw this, he tightened his grip even more. "I do care about them, but you've made their lives a living hell at all times. Sir, your behavior simply strengthens my resolve."

Xi Junpo slammed the table and stood up furiously. As he said this, he turned around and gave Ye Ping another look. "How obstinate. Let's see how long you can keep it up. Don't hold it against me if something bad happens soon."

Ye Ping felt powerless as he stared at his fading figure.

Hundreds of times.

The rich billionaire, Xi Junpo, relentlessly pressuring him to sell the copyright to his novel was hundreds of times.

Despite the fact that Xi Junpo was only a few meters away, Ye Ping understood that this man stood on the world's furthest and tallest Mountain. If dogs are not the same as wolves, Ye Ping was a nobody in Xi Junpo's world.

That was the way of life. Ye Ping was just an ordinary editorial staff who happened to write books in his spare time, while Xi Junpo was a guy with a slew of businesses on his hands.

Even if Ye Ping reports him to the authorities, his words would be treated as nothing but a bunch of nonsense. Even if he had evidence of his evildoings, Xi Junpo would just throw carrots at the rabbits, and the evidence would turn to ashes.

'That was the way of life of low-class people,' Ye Ping said as he walked to the elevator.

He stared at his phone as he hit the button that brings him to the ground floor. He clenched his teeth and decided to open the Qixian app.

The 999+ notification welcomed him, and he smiled slightly. He clicked on it, which brought up the comments section.

Despite the fact that his book had been out for a while, his popularity looked to be growing. Not only did the remarks encourage him, but they also made him grin.

'That time I met her' was the title of his book. It was a narrative about an introverted teenager who had lost his affection for the world.

Until one day, however, he discovered he had the ability to return 24 hours before his death, but each time he died, his lifespan decreased.

Then, as he helps more people and uncovers the identity of his mysterious killer, he gradually understands human emotions.

By the end of the story, he discovered the mysterious killer was his father, who worked as an undercover agent, and the girl who was always following him was a ghost. Shockingly, she was his childhood friend.

In the final paragraph, he discovers she was killed by his father.

After searching for her remains, he travels back in time when she was young in exchange for his life.

The protagonist's final words before death were: 'What makes humanity unique? This is due to their capability to control emotions. The scary aspect is that the more you suppress your emotions, the more you progressively fall into one of two sides of the coin: success or poverty. I used to be lazy and depressed, but when she came into my life, everything has progressively changed. Despite her inability to communicate, she added color to my world; she was cute and irritating. I'm filled with joy and love right now. Why would I hesitate if I could sacrifice my life for happiness and love? Though I hope she can find her king in this life.'

Overall, the book featured unexpected twists and turns of understanding human emotions. It was a good read.

Ye Ping slipped the phone into his pocket and exited the elevator. He bought a cigarette from a vendor after leaving the Xijing Network Building. He glanced up at the blue sky while he smoked.

This book speaks to him deeply and it was dedicated to his wife. The one who leads him to his happiness and love.

While he was thinking up here, he took his phone and phoned a number. Her wife's voice came from the other side a few moments later.

"Uhm, Honey, what's the matter?"

"What's wrong with your voice? "Are you at home?"

"Hmmm, I'm home. Are you coming right now?"

"I'm still working. Just calling you. I'll catch up with you later."

"Alright, Honey~~"

When the call was finished, Ye Ping frowned. His wife appeared to be acting oddly today.

He shook his head and decided to go for a walk in the park for the time being. He had nothing to do since the CEO had fired him. Although he wanted to inform his wife, he thought it would be best to tell her in person.

Ye Ping wandered along the street. After ten minutes, he came to a halt when he spotted someone he recognized. It was a woman with light blonde hair and tanned skin. Isn't that his wife?

Something didn't feel right to Ye Ping. She claimed to be at home, yet she was outside? Isn't this deceiving him?

Ye Ping decided to find out why. However, when he approached her, he noticed she was warmly clutching someone's hand.

He was in anguish. He stood there as if he were an idiot. Ye Ping watched his wife acting like a slut to this bastard, therefore she didn't notice him.

Ye Ping then heard her saying this to the man.

"Don't worry, he said he's still working," she said.

"Are you sure he wouldn't notice?" replied the man. "After all, I was his friend, and the child he was raising was mine."

Ye Ping snuffed out his cigarette. He was stunned and immobilized. It's no surprise that his son doesn't resemble him; he was this bastard's son!

He glanced at the man again and realized this man was his friend since senior year.

He clinched his hands and kept his emotions in check. While he stood there like a fool, he noticed his wife tenderly kissing the man as they merged into the crowd and crossed the road.

At that moment, Ye Ping was unable to process his thoughts. All he knew that his wife cheated on him.

As he stood there thinking, he laughed foolishly and lit another cigarette. He returned his eyes to the spot where his wife had gone and looked away.

'This is the life of a stupid fool,' Ye Ping muttered as he dragged his body aimlessly through the streets.

It was already nightfall when he sobered up, and he was on the roof of his apartment. He waited for his wife, who came up to him.

"Is that how you treated me?" Ye Ping inquired, his gaze fixed on his wife.

"What do you mean?" She inquired, her voice innocent.

"Forget it." Ye Ping replied as he glanced at her. "Let's divorce."

His wife was unconcerned, but she pretended to be terrified. "What exactly do you mean by that?"

Ye Ping gave her a chilly look and tossed the cigarette. He approached her and grabbed her by the neck. "Don't be an idiot and bring that child to that bastard!"

His wife simply pushed him away since his grip was not too tight. "So you know?" she said, looking at him.

Ye Ping remained silent.

His wife went on, "Even if you knew, so what? Let's get divorced then."

"What went wrong?" Ye Ping eventually spoke out, his voice slightly quivering.

"What did you do wrong?"

His wife burst out laughing. "Oh, yes, Ye Ping. I'm sure you get it. You offended the CEO of the well-known Xijing Network Corporate. My life was horrible because of you. Now tell me what went wrong!? Why should I stay with you if I'm not content?"

Ye Ping didn't say anything, which made his wife even more certain of her decision. Her husband had already been ruined!

"Why didn't you tell me if you're unhappy with me?" Ye Ping sighed as he gazed at the stars. "You played with my emotions and even cuckolded me. How humiliating."

Ye Ping turned around and stated, "I already filled a divorce; all you have to do is to sign it." Then you're free. Go wherever you're happy"

His wife remained silent. She asked as he was ready to depart, "You won't ask for anything?"

"You accompanied me for seven years. You formed my happiness and love throughout those years. You may get all I have for that."

As he walked away, Ye Ping said this. He then phoned a number after arriving on a desolate street.

"What are you calling for?" It was the voice of Xu Jinpo.

"You wanted the copyright, right?" Ye Ping lit up a cigarette.

"So you're going to sell it?" After a little pause, Xu Jinpo spoke out.

"Yes." "But I won't ask for money," Ye Ping said, "but I will make one request."

"I promise you, as long as it doesn't go too far."

"My request is that starting from now on, you will not make my relatives and family's lives any more difficult by giving them a job or anything else. Finally, I hope you can make my ex-wife and a man named Jing Xiu's lives miserable."

"Isn't this man one of your friends?"

"So you searched him as well. My request would then be simple. I want to see that you accomplish my request by tomorrow. I'm aware you're recording this right now, so I'll stay true to my words. I'm sure you'll accept this request, right?"

Xu Jinpo answered with a chuckle. "You're an interesting man. If it was a well-known tycoon, I would absolutely refuse. But some low-class people? You have my approval. But I need the copyright as soon as tomorrow at 8 a.m. Otherwise..."

"I understand." Ye Ping hung up the call. He blew his cigarette and gazed up at the sky. "Now that I've repaid you, my lovely wife, it's time to make your life a living nightmare. Is this what they say: your enemy may also be your ally? And what about an eye for an eye?"

Ye Ping's hair fluttered in the chilly air, giving him a smile.

Just like this, the next morning came...

Ye Ping's wife phones him at 7 a.m., shouting violently.

He, on the other hand, simply laughed hysterically as she begged him to settle this by talking.

But it was all for naught, Ye Ping was not moved.

Before the phone call ended, however, he told her, "I have paid for all you've done to me for 7 years by effectively keeping my belongings for free.

"This is me settling up for the treachery you did on me. I may forgive you, but you must pay for your actions. That is the way it is. And all you had to do was accept the misery you'd chosen to live in."

Ye Ping hung up the phone. He didn't know what happened after that, but he quietly cried as it was turned off. The gray world he once knew returned to him at this instant.

Just like that, 8 a.m. came, and Ye Ping signed the copyright paperwork.

Finally, he will leave no commitments before departing from this world. It was late at night, and Ye Ping was standing by a bridge.

It was raining, and lightning could be heard. Ye Ping's heart, on the other hand, was steadfast. He climbed the railings, ready to put an end to it all with the last whiff of a cigarette.

However, lightning came down at this precise time, striking the unlucky (or fortunate) Ye Ping.

He heard a mechanical voice before passing out.
