It all began as a typical day for our young protagonist, Charley. As usual, he woke up, ate breakfast, and then got ready to tackle the problems of the day. However, everything was set to change as he left his house and began walking to work.
No sooner had he taken a step onto the street when...
BAM
A rogue truck sent him to the afterlife.
"What the hell just happened?"
Charley clutched at his head as his entire body convulsed in pain. Yet, as if to say that his problems were irrelevant, a happy little village appeared in front of him. A gentle sunlight carresed every part of the village while all of the villagers walked around with a smile on their faces.
"Was that actually a semi-truck just now?"
Charley took one look at the village and decided to ignore it for now, but the bizarre situation only took another step further.
Fireworks flew into the sky and a magnificent voice began its announcement inside of Charley's head.
[Welcome, young hero, to the fantastic world of Avaron. I congratulate you, the one who was chosen to stand above all as the hope of this world. A grand adventure awaits, one filled with countless perils, but also the hope of a magnificent happy ending at the end of it all.]
"No but seriously, how could a truck of that size even get to my road? My house is at the end of a cul-de-sac..."
[...]
[Well then. No matter how you happened to come to this world, rejoice. The grandest of adventures awaits you. One filled with inevitable sorrow, but also the greatest feeling of fulfillment. So now, choose young hero, will you embark on this adventure to wipe out the evils of the world and stand as the hope of all humanity?]
"Really, no matter how I think about it, my death just doesn't make sense. For a semi-truck hauling a trailer, there's no way that it made the tight corners to reach my street and how could it have picked up enough speed to kill me like it did. I definitely think something fishy is going on here."
[Hmm, oh yes! Of course! Understanding the grand scale of what laid ahead of him, our young hero decided to take the time to seriously ponder over this decision. Because of course, there was no heading back after this point and he needed to prepare himself for that kind of dedication.]
Noticing that this strange voice decided to start commenting on his actions, Charley looked towards the village once more and then further up into the sky where the previous fireworks erupted.
"And what is with this strange voice that I keep hearing? No matter how I look at it, this just seems to be some sort of trap."
[Finally coming to terms with his decision, our young hero accepted his fate and took his first step by walking into the nearby village in hopes of getting his bearings. No wait, that's not right. Did you just say that this was a trap?]
Faced with the question, Charley nodded and replied, "Yes, and after what you just said I think I can confirm it beyond a doubt."
Feeling like he finally understood what had happened, Charley smiled for the first time since coming to this world. To help even more, the pain that he originally felt was all but gone now allowing him to think clearly about what he needed to do.
[Oh! I understand now. Our young hero came to the realization that some evil power was working behind the scenes, attempting to influence his life in very subtle ways. However, he knew that for now he could do nothing about this power and decided to follow along with his original plan of entering the village to understand more -- Wait why are you walking that way?]
Walking away from the village and into a dark looking forest behind him Charley said, "I've seen through your trap strange voice. Did you really think I would be stupid enough to walk into that 'friendly' village?"
Charley had a wide smile on his face as he continued to think through the situation.
[...]
[I think we might have gotten off on the wrong foot, young hero. Might I ask what your name is?]
"It's Charley"
[Ah yes, the young hero Charley.]
"No, it's just Charley."
[Um, so be it. Young Charley, why don't you take a second to really think through what you are doing here? Right in front of you, er well behind you now, is a beautiful and peaceful looking village, full of nice people that I'm sure would be happy to make your acquaintance. You could meet with the locals, understand more about the workings of the world, and importantly, get the opportunity to obtain some much needed weapons and supplies. Yes, looking at it objectively there is no reason why you shouldn't go the village regardless of what anybody says.]
[Ahem, and so, our young hero realized his mistake of turning his back on the village and once again decided to check it out.]
[...]
[No wait. Why aren't you turning around?]
Laughing hysterically, Charley didn't respond for some time.
[...]
Finally, after wiping some tears from his eyes, he said, "Oh boy, you almost got me there. Trying to use the ol' objective outlook bias to trick me. You were so close to getting me to believe."
Settling down to a mild smile, Charley continued, "But you messed up in one key area, Mr. Strange Voice. Reverting back to calling me a hero and even going so far as to say I made a mistake; yes, that is where you failed. I can see clearly, now more than ever, that you are just trying to trick me into that village to be caught in god only knows what kind of situation."
[...]
[No, but what are you on about now? The plan was to go to the village to speak with the locals and ask for help. There you would have been able to go to the general goods store and do some odd jobs in order to afford basic adventuring gear. You would have even had a chance to get to know the daughter of the merchant who runs the store and possibly make her into a companion.]
A certain light shone from Charley's eyes as he further proved his own suspicions.
"Oh you can try to trick me by offering as many potential benefits as you want at this point, but I'm afraid you have lost this battle. I've already seen through it all. You'll have to try much harder if you want to beat me next time."
[...]
[And so our young hero decided to... turn away from the village. For reasons unknown to many, he turned away from the grace of an easy starting point in this world and wanted instead to immediately travel to the dark woods outside of Sora Village. What awaited him, surely, were evil creatures and hard times; but he had not lost hope yet. With a wide smile on his face, our young hero sang a happy tune as he took his first, albeit strange, step onto his journey of becoming the hero of this world.]
