Chapter 10 - Maria Gestapo

Maria Gestapo left her house a quarter past eleven at night and began to walk towards Calvin's house. She was nervous because she knew she needed to be clever and slick while sneaking inside.

Calvin didn't know about her plans, and she hadn't texted him either in case his dad confiscated his phone and kept an eye on it.

She soon reached the Wraith residence with a knot in her stomach, second-guessing her decision to sneak in and whether it would be doable.

But she snuck around the house, climbed the garden fence, and landed in a rose-thorn bush. Perfect.

A thorn ripped the arm of her jacket, and she pulled out another from the palm of her hand. Maria looked around for any movement before crawling over the field towards the residence.

There were some lights inside the house, but she needed to figure out which room was Calvin's. Was this an idiotic plan? Probably, but she had come too far to back down now.

Mallory sat in bed and ate a sandwich while Ana adjusted her monitors.

She felt more vital each day but knew she had a long way to go.

"You are a fighter, Mallory, and you have made a distinguished process in healing already."

Ana said, and Mallory smiled, "When do you think I can stand and walk again?"

"Hard to say, maybe in a few days. But it won't be easy and will hurt the first tries." Ana replied with a severe tone, "Okay. I understand." Mallory answered.

Mallory fumbled with her blanket and bit her lip while Ana finished up before leaving. Hunter hadn't come back yet, and Blade was out in the living room while Ana was doing her regular checkup on her, but a little later at night than she used to.

"How is your memory, Mallory? Have you remembered anything?" Ana asked.

"No, I'm sorry," Mallory uttered nervously. "It's okay. It's been a little over a week, and it can take months to regain memories." Ana smiled, "I need to go now, but I will be here again tomorrow. Bye," Ana waved and left the room.

Mallory felt a bit anxious because she was lying; she clearly remembered what happened and who had caused this harm to her. But she feared the Wraith family. And she decided to never, ever speak of them again.

Maria snuck around the Wraith residence and sought an open window or a back door to enter; she almost gave up. The plan was crazy; she feared she'd have to retreat and admit her failure to break inside.

But then she came to the short side of the house and pulled the handle on a door that gave way and opened with a silent squeak.

Maria went in and shut the door after her. She was probably inside a storage room when she saw the boxes stapled along the walls.

She crossed the floor, opened another door, and found that it led into a hallway.

Maria felt the adrenaline rush into her system as she listened for any movement in the house before stepping down the hall.

With shaky steps, Maria slipped down the corridor and found a staircase.

She looked around with her heart down her throat before heading towards the second floor.

But a stair was squeaking when she stepped on it, and she froze when she heard footsteps approaching her from the first floor.

Maria panicked and feared she would get caught. She quickly ran up the stairs and chanced on making a right turn.

Hunter returned later than expected and was disappointed when he discovered that Mallory was already asleep.

"You okay? You seem a bit disappointed?" Blade asked his friend.

"No, I just hoped she would still be awake," Hunter muttered, and Blade smiled, "You like her, don't you?" Hunter shook his head, "Not romantically, if that's what you mean? I'm way too old for her, and that would be inappropriate, almost like taking advantage of her."

Blade frowned and mumbled, "If you say so!"

Blade did this when he had something to say, but he didn't see a point in saying it. Hunter rolled his eyes, "Just say it, Blade. Don't give me that old, 'if you say so' crap!"

"Honestly? She likes you as well, and age is the last problem. However, a relationship would not be a good idea since she has experienced something very traumatic and will need to heal emotionally before dating anyone."

"Yes. That's what I am thinking, too," Hunter replied.

---

Maria rushed through the hallway when she heard someone coming up the stairs. She panicked and opened the door to an unknown room to hide inside. She closed the door, ran across the room, and hid behind the curtains by the window.

Maria held her breath when the footsteps stopped outside the room, then exhaled a few seconds later when they continued down the hallway.

It was close, and she knew she had to be more cautious now if she would find Calvin in this massive house.

Maria walked over to the room and pressed an ear against the door to see if the coast was clear for her to continue her search for Calvin, and she froze when she heard voices coming down the hall.

It wasn't easy to distinguish the words, but she was almost sure that Calvin and a woman's voice speaking to one another.

Her heart beat quickly, and she wondered whether she should reveal herself or wait for them to separate and continue searching for Calvin herself.

The last alternative was probably the best, but that was still a dangerous move.

Calvin never spoke ill of his mother, just of his father.

And it might have been his mother he was talking with.

Maria took a deep breath and opened the door slightly before she peeped her head out and looked down the hall.

Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Calvin standing a few meters down.

But before she could do anything, she was alerted by heavy steps coming from the stairs. Maria quickly closed the door and rushed to hide behind the curtains again.

A few moments later, she heard movements from the hallway, and a female voice frantically yelled, "Stop hurting him!"

Maria was worried about Calvin getting hurt and ran into the hall.

She saw a big man dragging Calvin across the floor, so Maria did not hesitate before she threw herself over the man's back.
