It was much easier to maneuver up the spiral staircase to the lighthouse in leggings than it was in her floor length gown. It took her about half the time as she quickly jogged up, eager to have some time in a place that brought comfort and tranquility.
When she made it to the top, she pushed the door open and found that someone else must have had the same idea she had.
Charles was sitting on the edge of the bed with a spread of food in front of him. He had taken his tuxedo jacket off and had unbuttoned the top few buttons of his white shirt. When he heard the door open, he quickly turned his head to see who it was.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know you were up here. I didn't mean to bother you," she said before she started to close the door to leave him alone. She figured he wanted to be alone just as much as she did after how emotionally raw that announcement of their engagement was.
